Jane, no particular reason that I brought it up other than I was curious as to whether it might have been CJ in the fight!

I slept in this morning so I didn't get into town before the birds left their night time "roost". I saw one bird on the roof of the Brandywine Building who turned out to be RG who went after a Great Blue Heron!!!

I'M SURE YOU NEEDED THAT REST KIM! GO RG!!

Actually I got too much sleep and felt pretty crappy all day!

I got this from Mark, one of the biologists at the hack site...

"Yeah, it would have been nice if they stayed around for a couple weeks to
get our supplemental food, but just because they jumped doesn't mean they
won't survive. It just means we won't be able to keep tabs on them & will
have to hope for band sighting reports in the future. As I understand it,
the US Fish & Wildlife Service and Tri-state Bird Rescue decided to move
the birds because one (or both) was getting into danger in traffic, jumping
from the nest more than once before their flight feathers were fully
developed and were unable to maintain sustained flight. The age of the
birds was within the range that we normally get."

I was thinking about this and how could they possibly hunt when they still had to learn how to fly? It takes them at least a week to learn how to steer and land. How could they possibly catch a bird?

From the evidence, some of them do make it. Not the best way to bring one up, though.

Thanks for that report Kim. Still doesn't make one warm and fuzzy, after all, look how long the training has been for WB and RB. Who's doing the training?????

I don't understand it either, Kim, & would sure like to know how its explained. Bless your heart, Greg, keeping our chins up by reminding us that some do make it! Thanks!

A few years ago we had a resident falcon expert on our forum & you may have heard of her--Froona. When we had questions like this, we would ask her & she usually knew the answer. Unfortunately, she died a couple of years ago, & all we have left is what skygirlblue was able to pull together of the information Froona had shared with us.
:cryinggirl:

Now all we can do is share our observations & hope to come up with a semi-answer for these questions.

OK, I'M STARTING TO THINK KIM DOESN'T SLEEP AT ALL, LOL!

4:24 ONE IS SCREAMING ALREADY!

4:27 2 JUST FLEW. ONE WAS THE SCREAMING KID AND I'M GUESSING THE OTHER WAS AN ADULT.

4:28 I SEE 2 ON BW BLDG, NOT SURE IF ONE FLEW BACK OR IF THERE ARE 4.

4:30 I SEE 3 ON THE BLDG.

5:14 STILL SEE 3 ON BLDG, BUT LOOKING FROM MY OFFICE, SO IT'S HARDER TO SEE.

Oh My goodness, Reenie you are right! Thanks for the Relay of Kim's sightings. Going to be very Hot today, so I guess Kim wanted to get there when they woke up! LOL Great to have daily reports. I check the Cam everyday, several times a day, but never catch anyone. They keep the scrape nice and clean.

I was really surprised to hear all that screaming so early and then to see two of them flying! After I saw three on the building a little later all was quiet again though so I'm wondering if the adult flew out and got some cached food to give to the kid and he was eating.

From 9:15 this morning. Not sure what CJ is looking at!

Am wondering if CJ is still in the box? Haven't seen a falcon on the cam in ages. Nice surprise. And now he's gone.

I just checked the archives and it was actually RG in the box...first image at 4:17 and last at 4:52! She seems to hang out in there for at least 30 mins at a time these days. If I didn't know better, I would have thought she was going to lay an egg the way she was standing over the scrape the other day!

I bet she'd like to lay an egg! I think these 2 have decided that parenthood agrees with them, & I'd have to agree! :flirty:

I should close my lips but...

on a Potive note: When bringing the falcons back to recovery, they hacked all the peregrine chicks. here in Edmonotn , they were raised in Wainwright and then hacked.

We do know of course that a lot did not make it but look what we have today.

I do not like seeing hacking for the sake of hacking. I still think they stand best chance of survival in a nest site, with an adult.

but I would like to see them all back in a better surroundings. this may no longer be possible , so we do the best we can in urban settings.

Great job done at this site by the way. :loveshow: :loveshow:

Thanks for the relay Reenie and KIM, AMEN to THAT!

Kim, I guess it's safe to say, one of the Boy's is gone? Is it White Boy? I should go back and read who you have been seeing, but am running out of time this morning.

Try to stay cool today on this very Humid and Hot day.
