This evenings update...titled "Losing Hope"

There is no certainty, but sounds as if Hope may no longer be with us.

I just can't believe this....

:cryinggirl: :tissue: :cryinggirl: :tissue: :cryinggirl:

Edited to add: I would guess this hunter does not want to admit taking Hope. If he did, he knows there would be outrage. So, if there is no registration and there is no admission, I would think this would want to be kept EXTREMELY under the radar by the hunter.

After Hope not being seen for an entire week now, it is probably the case. The hunter however, had every right to shoot her as she was uncollared, and no ribbons. He should not be harassed for this. The fault lies with the lack of a "sense of urgency" by the researchers to explore other alternatives to mark her. I am so overwhelmed with pain and sadness at the thought of losing our Hope, that I cannot post my thoughts at this time...I will "unleash my fury" at them on another day. My heart feels so broken and it is such a great loss...cannot imagine the forest without Hope.

Well, this has sufficiently ruined my morning and possibly my day...Personally, I hate the sport of hunting even though I can understand the rationale for some species...Any bear loss is sad, but of all the bears to be felled by a rifle, its doubly tragic that it may have been Hope..... :girlsad3: :girlsad3: :girlsad3: I just pray when they get more info on Monday, that they learn that it WAS NOT Hope shot by this hunter.

I was thinking that maybe they could spraypaint the research bears. That would at least be a solution to the bears that won't keep collars on. If they painted a white line down each side of the bear, it would be easy for hunters to see, and it would also run the bear's pelt for trophy hunting as well, so it would be doubly positive.

That was one of my thoughts too - that PETA group used to spray paint a non toxic paint on the baby harp seals to stop the "clubbers" from killing them for their baby fur. Hot pink paint either sprayed on a bear that wont be collared or splashed on if the noise of the spray bothers them - it should last 6wks on them and no hunter would want a pink bear on his wall. The cooperating hunters also would be able to see the hot pink bear and know she was a research bear. Most of the "biology" people I know have openly discussed these things and considered as many options as possible. NABC's lack of action, knowing for the past 2 yrs they had to do something with Hope, is a huge disappointment, but expected.

I just read the latest news as well. Such sad news. I don't really understand why the hunters can't stay out of the research area. It seems like such an easy thing to do, but I guess the NABC has really pissed them off. And I'm sure the hunter won't report it now...... :tantrum2: :sosad :sosad

Oh, no! I do not support killing another species for pleasure or profit, so this is really hard to take. Especially when one side is at such a terrible disadvantage. I feel just awful that Hope is dead.

I too would think that painting the bears might work because it sure would be a big sign to all of the hunters.
But then again it could be a big problem maybe with the idiot poachers, I am truly sorry for all of you that have followed this great family thru it all I tried to watch but that was when Jason died and I just couldn't stand the pain, prayers right now that it will not be Hope.

From Sue M. on Lily's facebook page:
Lily the Black Bear
Many have asked about the picture in last night's update 9/23. As I was tracing Lily's travels to look for signs of Hope I saw a beautiful shelf fungus. I impulsively broke a twig from a nearby tree and scratched HOPE on the fungus and enclosed it in a heart. Why? I just needed to.
It remains there on a tree in the woods where she last roamed. -- Sue M
