I just got the word from Kim about the tape colors on the chicks. This year we have a Red Girl, Yellow Girl, White Girl, and Green Girl! (We might have to call our new Red Girl something like "Little Red" or "R2" to keep the Red Girls apart.)

P.S. I've added this new information to the "About the Wilmington Falcons" topic, which has background information and histories of the nesting seasons starting with 2010 when the cam was first available. You can find that topic here:

Ethel, thanks for all the details from yesterday. Of all days to work a full day!

Kim, thank you so much for all the wonderful pictures and coverage on here. The video's were great. So glad it was done in daylight and done well. They are wonderful girls, just like their mother was in her young years. Very interesting that NG in HBG has had only Boy's, and Red Girl mostly Girls. Hmmmmmm!!!

Of course, they are both young birds and have many years ahead! We pray!

So far this morning, the girls are doing a great job of staying hidden. I wish they'd come out to play soon!

If anyone wants to read Froona's description of how/why the sex of a chick is determined, here is the link --> . Scroll down about 3/4 of the page to "Gender of the chick." It's very interesting!

I can't follow the Froona link from here so will have to read it at home. Last year Red Girl had 3 boys and 2 girls as compared to 4 girls this year. If as you say "the more females in the bunch, the more the mom feels there is an abundance of food," Red Girl may have been favorably impressed with CJ's hunting performance last year and courtship feeding this year. Also, she may be growing more familiar with her territory and confident in its ability to produce enough food, whether CJ catches it or she does herself. CJ is a great hunter but Red Girl is no slouch either.

Red girl takes after her mother in more ways than one.

I'm guessing CJ probably impressed the heck out of her last year with that young Cooper's Hawk he brought home! :)

I'm guessing you're right, and it was "young Cooper's Hawk" in the sense of one-year old adolescent, not month old baby. Young male, but full grown, as big as an adult male.

Trying to remember if CJ brought that Coop in the day some of us from Harrisburg were down there. That rings a bell. Tuned into the cam about ten minutes ago. One girl in upper right screen corner, and one in center of upper screen. The one in the center did a healthy PS!

Jane , we did watch CJ bring that Hawk in while we were there. Remember how he was pumping his wings and flew right over our heads. It was an AWESOME moment! Kim got a nice picture of it. Maybe Reenie did too!

Use the link provided.

Scroll down and click on Mystery of the Egg on left side.

Then, scroll about down about 3/4 of the way on page. If you can't find it, do a search for the word sex and you'll find the information.

Hi Susan - Oh, it did. When I tried to link directly to the page, it took me back to main site. Something about an imbedded page in a site. So at first, it would work, but then immediately change sites.
