Now he's got the egg separated from the chicks & I think he's going to incubate it. He apparently feels its a lot easier to lay on an egg than on the chicks.

Well, I don't know--now he's moved over to the chicks. Guess he's thinking about covering them.

I'd say that Mom isn't the only inexperienced one here! :egg11:

I'd say you're right about that, I just hope that she comes back. :egg11:

Ok, here she is with some stash.

Our new boy did the same thing, as this guy. It took him a bit but today he could cover 3 kids. I thought he would smother them he kept moving around so much.the first time , he lay across form eggs and chick and just stared at them.

they managed to incubate enough to get 2 hatches so I am sure they will be fine. the little ones do not need too much food at first.

I'm hoping she covers them well for the night because its been chilly here at night so I think it is there as well. This afternoon she was panting so I'm sure it was quite warm & they didn't have to be totally covered, but hopefully she covers them tonight.

OK, it looks like she knows they need to be covered now.

Thanks for the great pics and the great coverage. This would be comical if there weren't 2 chicks lives at stake. .looks like things are getting better. .

Just checked in, and mom is covering the chicks. She has looked stunned all day by this turn of events. I don't know if she was quite prepared for the eggs to become chicks. Now, she and Mr. Sawatzke, who also looks pretty stunned by the arrival of these fluff balls, have to get used to parenthood. You learn as you go, like everyone, I guess.

Holy Moly ...!!! Just watched this video Peggy Jean made of the 1st chick hatching. Mom was quite a bit over zealous in trying to help it. She's got to be a first time Mom. She kept pecking at it and pulling on it and rolling it around! Jeepers!

This is almost 3 hours condensed down to 30 minutes .. but worth the watch! :)

Thanks, Patti! Yes, it is hard to watch first-time moms, but when they catch on quickly & become great moms, its really heart-warming! I think she understands the feeding now & she seemed to feed them frequently, now she's trying to learn how to keep these wiggly, energetic chicks covered. There was one sticking out a bit when I tuned in this morning, but she realized that & moved herself around til it was covered again. :egg 19:

First Dad tried to feed the chicks just now, then Mom tried ... they are both a little awkward about it yet, and the babies got virtually nothing. :egg15:

I'm not up for watching the video, but thanks for posting. I'll check it out after I know they will both be ok. It's always rough going at first, but then again, we know that chicks die in the nest many times and we never know why.

bev. - plug in your kettle :laugh2
