This nest is located at the Riverside Health Care Center, Missoula, MT

The 2011 nesting season was faced with many challenges. . Swollen rivers resulted in cloudy waters, making it difficult to find fish. Because of this, one of the two chicks died, due to low food supply. .

Some basic info on this nest sent to me today from a project biologist. The biologist notes that some of the info must still be verified.

April 3-first osprey seen on nest. April 9-two osprey on nest. The male from previous years went missing sometime after the 23rd of April. The first, likely infertile egg was laid between April 23 and May 12. May 15-2nd egg. On May 16 we observed three osprey on the nest, but as far as I know we have not positively identified the third. May 20-3rd egg. Incubation takes around 35 days, so we would expect the 2nd egg to hatch around the 19th of this month.

And as of today, still waiting for a hatch.

Revised hatch dates as of June 18

1st egg: Friday 22 June to Thursday 28 June
2nd egg: Monday 25 June to Sunday 1 July
3rd egg: Saturday 30 June to Friday 6 July

Really ? I've only just started watching the cornell and missoula nests. Do ospreys migrate through the Gulf ? Wonder if this has affected numbers returning and also hatches. I read that the flame retardants they used affect reproduction. Will need to research this.

The juvie known as Crown has a bad wing :girlsad3:
See how its wing is drooping in the picture well I just looked and here is what is said it seems to be able to fly it was just on the nest and now is gone but it is still a terrible thing to watch & this is why I don't watch like I use to I just can't watch them suffer and in pain

Comment by:Osprey Cams

Hi all,
We know that you are very attached to this remarkable Hellgate Osprey family! We also know that many of you are worried and concerned, especially about Crown with her injured wing. We have been getting messages from some people who are so upset that they can't bare to watch and are begging us to turn off the camera.

We want to reiterate again that these are wild birds - they are not pets and this is not a Disney movie. What we have set out to do with this Osprey camera is allow you a very intimate view of the trials and tribulations of one Osprey family. What comes with this is the good and sometimes the sad. While we do jump in once in a while (to remove embedded fish hooks, rescue Ospreys if they get tangled up in baling twine, go see if there is a pile of mangled Ospreys underneath the nest in the middle of the night, etc.) our basic philosophy is hands off - we cannot micromanage the lives of wildlife.

Oh man .. Crown is on the nest now .. and while she looks alert, that wing is really drooping. . There is no way she'll be able to hunt/migrate unless there is huge improvement. .

I just can't watch. . :sum7:

Well, this was posted yesterday, but it gives me a little bit of hope. .if they are telling the truth. . .btw, she's not on the nest right now. .

    Hi all,
Here is some more information about the Hellgate Osprey family. Crown is still drooping her wing, and we know that many of you are very concerned. We have been inundated with requests to catch Crown and somehow "fix her up." We completely understand your concern, but here is why that would be just about the worst thing we could do right now. Even though she really droops her wing when she is sitting, she flies REALLY well. I watch her every day flying along the river, and she flies with absolutely no sign of a problem. The last few days I have watched her dive into the water several times, and yesterday I watched her catch a fish on her own! She ate it in a tree about 1/4 mile up river. So Crown is much better than she looks - take a deep breath and calm down!

There would be many problems if we tried to catch her: 1) now that she is flying it would be hard to catch her; 2) there would be risks associating with catching her and we might actually hurt her worse doing so; 3) after having talked with rehabilitators and vets, the best thing for her right now is to continue flying. She is doing this on her own right now really well and has the choice of when to fly and when to perch. Also, Ospreys are one of the MOST difficult raptors to keep in captivity. They do not take well to it, get extremely stressed out, and some have to be force fed all the time. Not a good scenario, and not one we would wish on Crown.

Also, and perhaps most importantly, this is an incredibly important time for Crown as she is making the transition from completely dependent chick to independent Osprey. If we were to catch her now and bring her into captivity, we would minimize the chances that she could learn to fish and migrate on her own. This might doom her to a pretty miserable life.

So the big picture is: Crown is flying perfectly well on her own, learning to catch fish on her own, and is still being fed by Stanley. There is no magic wand to "fix her up" but rest assured that these are the best possible things that can be happening for her. Our intervention would wreck all these good things.

Since we have not seen Iris or Hook for many days now (even perched in trees along the river) they have undoubtedly started migrating south to points unknown. This is as it should be.

    Hope all this helps!
    Erick Greene of Project Osprey
