The website says they took the chicks away for banding, this morning, I guess. No indication of when they were returned. I hope they will give us details later.

The Great River folks have posted this on the site, about the banding yesterday:

Quote:
The Raptor Resource Project was at the Elk River Energy Recovery Station today to band the two eyasses. Both falcons are female and appear to be healthy. They are now named Scout and Larissa! We’ve posted video and photos of the banding on our Facebook page. Check it out! http://www.facebook.com/grenergy »

I don't know about the name, Scout, as this was the name of our highly-regarded female at Columbus, who everyone still misses, but I presume that no one thought of that here.

I don't know if this is Scout or Larissa, but a parent out of view is making alarm calling sounds and baby is chiming in too.

And she doesn't look all that trusting either. :egg 19:

They likely don't know about the name and what it means to Columbus Scout fans and I'm sure no disrespect is intended at all. No doubt the name has some significance to the fans here and that should be respected as well. I believe it was a young Boy Scout here that built this nest box for the falcons so they may be honoring his contribution and that has enabled all of us to enjoy this nest site the past few years.

Scout lost her life defending her baby and here they are celebrating a new life which in turn ensures the survival of the species so it seems fitting to me.

As I said, I don't think they even thought of the significance of the name Scout to falcon fans; I never implied disrespect. The Elk River people have not yet given us the reason for choosing these particular names, as often they do. If the name has significance to them, I would be interested, as the name Scout has significance to many of us watchers out in peregrine falcon land. And from what I have observed over time on BCAW (and I may have missed occasions), is that usually at banding time, names are chosen that have not already been used elsewhere.

WOW. . .so, we have a Scout here. . .hmmmmmmmmmmmm. .. well, there will always be only one Scout for me .. but, Carly, you are right, this is a new life. I do hope she can live up to the "awesomeness" of our beloved Columbus Scout.

I did find this article, which sheds some light on the significance of the names:

Larissa is named after one of Brenda Geisler's (of GRE) co-workers
Scout after the International Harvester truck. .( what???? :egg14:)

Elaine, about names: I got this info a while back from Donna Daniels (of Ohio DNR). She said that Ohio has a policy that no names are to be repeated in the state. (its not always followed) I guess each state DNR has their own naming rules? Just a guess on my part.

I also hope that Scout can live up to her name. Thanks for the info on the names! :egg 19:

There was a falcon named Scout (from Wisconsin) who nested with Kinney in downtown Indy from 1995-2002 (8 seasons). Many were brokenhearted when KathyQ arrived and Scout "disappeared."

Like some of you, though, when I hear the name "Scout" I think of "Scout of Columbus." (Sunday it will have been 2 years. :cryinggirl: )

Ya never know what the chicks/parents are going to have to go thru here: snow, wind, lightning storms, and the heat. Guess it makes them tough! :egg 19:
