From my rough translation , it appears because of warm weather and S2 moulting, S2 is going to start her training later that was previously expected. But they have taken her bands off , in order to fix her with the tethers. she will now prepare to start her work with the falconer. they will keep us appraise of her progress. She has done a good moult which does not always happen in captivity. Not all tail feathers are in yet but she is healthy and ready.

Thanks Bev, for your quick translation. Sounds like that covers it, judging by the video clip. It was so nice to see S2,and she looks so calm. Fingers crossed the next phase in her rehab goes well.

A few weeks later than planned, due to the extremely hot weather and the fact that S2 still was moulting, she was taken to the falconer yesterday.
Her colour and tracking station bands were removed but will be placed back when she is released. She seemed quite calm during the whole procedure.
Her moult is almost complete, just two hand- and two tail-feathers are not yet fully grown in, which is quite remarkable for a bird in captivity. She looks very healthy and strong.
Now she has to get used to the falconer, accept him as her source of food. Then the training can begin to build up her strength and make sure that she can use her injured wing without any problems.

I hope to be at De Mortel when she is released, so I can give you all a eye-witness report of what happens.

Did you all read the text at the end? I think it's very nice :thumbup :girlyes:

I'll second that!

The initial preparations

Gemert, Friday, August 24, 2012

The time has finally come; the peregrine S2 is now actually working on her return to the wild!

The intention was that this would already have been started a few weeks ago, but given the fact that S2 was still molting, and because of the very warm weather of the past week, we have only now decided to begin preparations.

Today the falconer took her out of the flight enclosure where she has spent the last few months recovering from her injuries in peaceful and quiet surroundings. That this rest period has been of benefit to S2 is evident from the condition of her plumage; she has replaced two primaries and two tail feathers after she had completed her annual molt. It is quite remarkable for a wild bird in captivity to come through the molt so well; it shows that the care, peace and quiet which she has received have been the fortunate and correct choice. Not all her new feathers have completely grown in yet, but she is healthy and ready for the next phase.

The falconer now has the peregrine S2 wearing "anklets": these are leather bands which are attached to her legs. In order to do this, we had to remove her white leg band with S2 on it, and the metal band of the migration station, but these will be replaced by a bander at a later date.

During the next few weeks she will be tamed, and then she will undergo training to bring her into condition.

We will keep you informed of her progress in the coming weeks!

Thanks for posting the pictures and the translation. I just can't watch the video, it stresses me out to see her stressed out. I am so worried about how hard this has been on her as the wait is just longer and longer. Hang in there S2, you can make it.
