Thank-you for the banner SGB and all the tributes. :loveshow: I will come back in and read them all this evening.

I wear my heart on my sleeve and still am having trouble with this one. I know everyone is shocked and loved her and respected her ,but for me, besides my Miss Edmonton, Mariah and S2 were my reasons for becoming so attached to these wonderful falcons. And we have learned so much .

And I cannot forget how much she meant to Froona also.

So I will be back but I have to process.

My thanks also to the beautiful tributes to S2 to all who have posted them. I also thought of Froona. She's lucky to be in a better place now.

I come back from a tiring weekend to this terrible news. I cannot even function here at work, I am just devastated; I wish I could go home and cry. I don't know if I will get over this.

Elaine,
We are all right there with you on the way you feel, it is these terrible times that bring us all together as the BCAW family. We have our long distance shoulders there for the tears we shed & the tissue box next to us when we start to think to much, but we will get thru this as we always do, it just takes a long time to heal our hearts and prepare ourselves for more heart ache down the road

S2 pulled the world together. We all watched and prayed . We took turns in our different time zones, waiting for a miracle to happen. And then on Mothers Day S2 showed us what a great peregrine she is. I loved her and she stole my heart. Pa also stole my heart that year as he figured out how to feed his little ones and keep S2 happy also.

We all learned so much from this wonderful lady. My hear is heavy and I cannot quite comprehend this. :tissue: :tissue: She was so close.

I am sorry I just have to close out for now. Fly free S2. You are with many of the greats now.
Well said Bev.

I found this in the archives and I hope it's OK to post it again. I thought it might be pertinent. It was Froona's post.

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
you have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
high in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager body through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my wing and touched eternity...."

Thank you, Cheryl, for resurrecting that beautiful poem of Froona. Timeless . . .

Thank you, Donna, for the candle page link where each of us can put some light into the World in the name of S2.

I have just spent the past few minutes going through all the pics and video posted here that all of you have shared to honor S2. Its always so tragic when the world loses any of these beautiful creatures, but when we lose one that we have all loved, that we have all watched, and that we have all cheered for, it is extremely difficult. Tho' her arrival at this nest raised such horror and anger, a miracle occurred on that Mother's day that laid the foundation for what an awesome falcon, mother, mate she was. That will be her legacy. What is so infuriating (for me) is although she was brought down by man, she was also nurtured by man, brought back to health, loved, cared for, yet felled by a fly!! Seems so unfair!!....but there is so much of nature that is unexpected and out of our control. Thankfully, most of it is wondrous and beautiful.

Cheryl, thanks for reposting Froona's poem. . and Donna, for providing the link to the gratefulness candle.

We have lost so many great ones this year!!! :sorrow:

Yes, we have lost many great falcons this year, it is so heartbreaking and hard to accept.

On my forum a couple of people started pointing fingers at the falconer, accused him of not taking care of S2 properly.
I find this appalling and totally unfounded. They don't know the person, nor the location and circumstances at all.

In an email from VWG I received they wrote that all involved have been talking about and analysing the events these past few days, to see if there was anything that could have prevented the death of S2.
Together they had to draw the conclusion that there never was a moment at which action should/could have been taken. There were simply NO signs of problems at all.
S2 ate well on Thursday, there was still some food in her stomach and she behaved normal, absolutely no signs of any ailment.

There was an interesting fact about the larvae that I didn't know:
These larvae (or maggots) excrete a fluid that acts like a sedative/painkiller in order to remain undetected by the host.
So S2 probably never felt anything of this infestation and this is the reason why the falconer never suspected anything wrong with her.
