I isolated one of the frames (I'll do some more)...this is a "fly" or bug...not falcon..even though at full speed you get the impression it is a bird...

Okay... Here's the report from boots.. posted by Mary @ 7:34PM on SF Yahoo Forum:

Sounds like Lil is MIA

Mohawk on the nest consistently today, not relieved by another PEFA at all today.

Alexea, Cheryl, Rick and I were downtown, (alexea most of the day and the others of us joining her mid-day). We had Mohawk on camera and went looking for other birds.

A falcon landed on the east side of PG&E while Alexea was there alone and I was camera driving. Mohawk flew off, returning later.

With all of us there, a falcon landed on the east side, sat on the top set of windows 3 columns from Mission. After 20 minutes it flew east.

We split up with one, then 3 of us going west to see the Paramount/Sutter pair. We had seen one circling and one landing on the Paramount building as we drove off the freeway and went back an hour later to check. One (the falcon) was on the clock tower at 2nd and Mission, eating. The tiercel came by to copulate with her. We headed back to Main and Mission.

Mohawk flew off the nest ledge in hunting mode, went into a couple of stoops then headed to the north out of sight. He returned about 15 minutes later with a large pigeon, landed on the east side of PG&E only 10 stories up from the ground. He plucked and ate until the pigeon fell off. He grabbed it and flew across the street to the top of the Walgreen's building where he finished it off. Since that's only 8 stories high we had a good view and concluded the Mohawk is Dan. He flew to the brown building at Spear, feaked and rubbed the top of his head and flew around, then back to the nest ledge and into the scrape.

When he got inside we heard loud and constant e-chups for 5 minutes. He stopped for about 15 minutes and we heard chups again and looked up to see a falcon on top of the building about in the middle of the building. She flew past the nest ledge and Dan chupped. She circled the building, again flying past the ledge, then went to the top of 45 Fremont where she landed and sat. It is not Lil and it is not the Paramount/Sutter falcon.

We stayed for a few more minutes then left. The camera was no longer picking up a good image from inside with the darkness coming on.

Dan sat on eggs by himself today, taking a couple of breaks but was not relieved by a falcon.

OK...mwplay...that was a great report (tho' not encouraging) and certainly fits!! I thought it was Dan all along...but, now to worry abut Lil..and he's echupping and not alarm calling?...what's that about...does that mean something has happened to Lil and he has already accepted an interloper?

I've got more pics coming...just bear with me..

The last picture SGB is what I saw when I said bird. I knew the smudge type things were bugs. you can se the difference because you can see the wings.

Thanks Maryanne.

Well, breaking down the vid, there were more bugs than birds..but, the bugs gave the illusion of a dog fight in the sky...so annoying...

Bev - I too think Lil was there yesterday. And these watchers thought so too. It's just today, it's clear we've had only one bird on. I think last night, when the sun went down, Dan was on duty. Maybe Lil never returned?

Well, I'm not giving up yet!!! The good news is that its not the Paramount/Sutter group...Now to figure out who they saw...I am sure they know these birds a whole lot better than we do, I just hope they are wrong and that it really was Lil making a return to the building.

When this all started today, first light showed Featherbird (Who we now know is Dan) was on the eggs. That means to get the feather, stuck so solidly to his forehead, he had to have left the box...Or, somebody else was on the eggs over night and he came in to relieve that falcon and he got the feather before he came back.

I don't know...so many scenarios!!!

Let's hope for more clarity tomorrow...

yeah I think you do. My grandkids are going to be saying it. LOl( the word poo)

I agree with SGB myplay. We have to wait an d see. no matter how long I have watched my falcons, somedays I would think who is that. and if were not for the bands I would thought I had a different bird.

Let us jsut keep our hopes high for now :girlluv: :girlluv:

Slightly Off-Topic

Not sure where we are posting about SFO, the tiercel who is rehabbing with Glenn.

Glenn's new post:

SFO: Somewhat Related

John Lewis sent me this video after he and others read the band (82/P) on a courting tiercel. I banded this bird two years ago (2011) at San Francisco Airport so it is possible that he is the son of the tiercel, SFO in my backyard. The video shows the young tiercel being banded at the airport, and then yesterday having his band read not far away at the 280 bridge at the Crystal Springs Dam. I have not previously listed this urban structure site because successful nesting has not yet been documented. Here is another “band encounter” for the year.

Video can be seen on Glenn's blog
