Glenn Stewart just posted this on SJ Yahoo Forum:

Another Banded Falcon from San Jose Found Nesting

John Lewis and Lori Michel read the band on a newly identified falcon today: 57/Z, Hope, the 2012 San Jose City Hall daughter of Clara and EC (reared by Fernando). She is paired with the 2011 male (band read a few weeks ago by John and team members) from the San Francisco Airport United Airlines hangar. As a 2011 offspring she is considered "second year" by the bird banding lab since the report came in after January 1, even though she is still in juvenal plumage. Clearly, we have a very inexperienced pair, but John reports copulation attempts. . --glenn@scpbrg

Woo Hoo! Wouldn't it be great if she actually produced young!

There was no picture, just a post. If they do post a picture, I'll bring it over. I'm sure if she does nest, they will be following her closely because she may be the first sub-adult that nests successfully in CA, or at least that they are aware of.

I can't remember when the due date is here, but Clara was acting like she might have heard something.

The third egg was laid on 2/24, so I'm thinking by now there could be peeping from the eggs. I forget how many days it is from laying til hatching (have to be reminded every season).

Last year first hatch was 43 days after first egg, 37 days after third egg.

I know we are getting ready for hatch at this site, but wanted to share something I found today...

Here is a video of Haya after she was released. It was taken by Shirley Doell, who has watched Hiko and his mates on the Fruitvale bridge over the last few years. In this video, she pans her scope to the bridge, then back to Haya. Haya is within eyesight of her old nest and you can see Hiko's new mate Tremaine on the bridge. Thought it was an interesting perspective. These two who have battled are within eyesight of each other and at this point, to my knowledge, are living peacefully within their own territories.

What I never realized was how salmon colored Haya's breast is. She was the first peregrine I ever saw live and in person. So happy she had a good rehab ending!

Thanks for the reminder, DEF!

That video of Haya was great, mwplay--she's so beautiful! You have some peace-loving (& smart) peregrines in CA, since EC is also living next to his old territory. Reminds me of that song "If you're going to SF, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair" (or feathers, maybe)!

I can't believe I just posted about her last night....

Haya....

Glenn Stewart just posted:

IN MEMORIUM

I regret to inform everyone that HAYA was found dead beneath the Hegenberger overpass. A headless pigeon was found nearby. We speculate that she was struck by a car shortly after capturing the pigeon. This is a tough break for all of us--those who provided medical treatment, rehabilitation conditioning, observing following release, and everyone who thought about and cared about the outcome for this bird. These things happen every day but we do not know about it unless it is a banded bird--that someone finds and reports. Thanks to the work of many, she did not meet her end shot and starving or in a medical clinic, but with her face into the wind while carving out a piece of the San Francisco Bay as her own. With regrets, --glenn@scpbrg

I just can't believe this terrible news. She had lost so much, struggled so hard to survive, and now she is dead. How can so much misfortune befall one little bird? :sorrow: :cryinggirl:

This is very sad news as I've followed Haya's story since she and her daughter were both shot. I feel bad for Glenn, who put so much time getting her to the point where she could live free again to have this happen but that's the danger these Raptors face each day. This reminds me of our loss of Unity who also got hit by a car while chasing a pigeon. Fly high and free, Haya. :sorrow:

Good grief, something just made Clara jump out of her skin. No sound, so don't know what it could have been. Meanwhile, getting another look at the eggs, no hatches yet.

Ok, FC is on duty, so maybe it was just a food delivery, but when she jumped, I did too. Maybe we're all just a little bit jumpy this close to hatch. Oh wait, Clara on the louver preening.
Edit:
Oh how sweet he is. You know they must hear their little babies peeping under there.
