OMG....this just breaks my heart...All that she had been through, overcome, then achieved..and to end like this. I know all those that worked with her so closely must be heart broken....I wonder if she had a mate...or eggs....just so, so sad!!!
I was so glad when she was successfully rehabbed and released. I really feel sorry for those that really dedicated so many hours into rehabbing her and then following her progress. It must be very hard for them.
She had no mate. I literally just posted a video of her last night on the SJ thread. I found it when I was looking at Shirley Doell's You Tube channel. Shirley follows Hiko & his family at the Fruitvale bridge. The video showed Haya on the US Bank building in Oakland, and then Shirley panned her scope towards the bridge. Tremaine (Hiko's new mate and the falcon Haya battled with right after she was released from rehab) was sitting on the bridge and they were in eyesight of each other. I often wondered if after she was stronger, would she attempt to take her territory back. Then I wondered what Hiko's response to her was, because he had to have seen her. Made me think about DC, Beauty & Pigott in Rochester and Pa, VV and 2OR in De Mortel.
Haya was the very first peregrine I ever saw in the wild. A few years ago, I heard they had spotted and identified Hiko at Fruitvale. It's only about 25-30 minutes away from where I live, so I decided to take a drive one day to see a peregrine. When I finally saw her I understood what it must feel like for people who watch these birds for hours. I couldn't look away and what was only supposed to be a "short visit" turned into hours. (me and watching these birds!)
Their nest location is over a narrow waterway. One side is Oakland and more industrial. The other side, Alameda, backs up to a small retail shopping mall. There's a really nice path and some benches. It was a great way to spend a few hours, watching Haya and Hiko, and all the other birds and ground animals that live there. I was so focused on watching them, that I was scared half to death when I thought there were rats coming out of the grass just a few feet away from me... I think they were some kind of ground squirrel! I was looking up, instead of down and not really paying attention to my surroundings - (stupid!).
I guess the positive is that she lived, she reproduced and she probably taught many about rehabbing a wild falcon. She, like EC, was displaced from her territory, but lived right on the edge, still able to see her home. Now, I wonder about Lil - maybe she's just out of our eyesight, but close enough for Dan & Cher to see her.
