I'll just say...(again)..."I'm not surprised"!!!
Now...I really, really really, hope they will remove those 3 eggs. I would hate for Cher's egg(s) to be jeopardized because of the other 3. It is really gonna be interesting to see how this plays out...You are so right, mwplay...Dan is in hard incubation mode....geeeeeeez...
I pray they don't drag their feet on this one...and with the holiday weekend, we could have 2 eggs (+3) by Monday!!!!
Oh...and this will test that other theory..cher will "feel" 4 eggs under her..will that tell her body to stop production? Now that she laid an egg, based on some posts I'm reading, I do not believe the eggs will be removed. If she had not laid, and approval was given by state to remove, my guess it would be a different story. We were just a few days past anticipated hatch. Many thought the eggs would not hatch, but in the off chance they did, I think there was a plan to wait until that was out of the question.
Agreed on the theory part - I had posted that on the Yahoo group. Glenn's partial response to group:
"The discussion earlier hinged on the belief among some prominent falcon biologists that a peregrine begins to "shut down" her laying upon feeling two eggs under her (remember egg three is already on the way when #2 is laid). The extent to which Cher is "feeling" the eggs is in question. Now that she has put an egg in the scrape herself, will she be more careful about her incubation?" I wonder how many she will lay?
Few things I've noticed over the last 2 days:
She did what seemed like real nest exchanges with Dan. She may not have incubated correctly, but it seemed like she would stay in the scrape.
Yesterday, I thought we had a different falcon on the nest. She had an intense bonding session with Dan - very low bowing, beaking, echupping over the eggs. When she got on the eggs, she tucked them under and wiggled down - very unlike Cher. I emailed someone asking their opinion, and of course, that's when she decides to kick and not cover all the eggs.
Today, when there was a question if she had laid an egg, before she would give the big reveal, she repositioned herself (she had not been doing "normal" rotating), and I noticed her feet were curled. I had not seen that before. She also seemed to change her position about every 15 minutes. She still needs some work on her incubating skills. After she laid, she had the new egg and one other on either side of her wings instead of under her.
And lastly, I noticed when it went dark, she was on the nest versus Dan. Prior to tonight, to my knowledge, it had always been Dan on the night shift. Amazing how quickly the dynamics changed here.
I'm still amazed she laid today. I had the cam up and checked it periodically, and had shut it down about 30 minutes before I got an alert. Only thing I had noticed earlier in the day was Cher was on the nest panting - it was around 11:45. I had also checked San Jose and found Clara sunbathing at the same time. It was warm today, but not "hot" enough for Cher to be panting so hard. And, interesting she used the same scrape with the other eggs versus digging her own cup.... Remember Durand that one year with 2 in one cup and 3 in the other?
How this all unfolds is going to be very interesting.
