WE MIGHT HAVE A NEW EGG IN SF!!!

Working on trying to get an egg count now. If we have 4 in the scrape, we have a new one! Watch at 3:11 in video - looks like a new wet egg!

This was captured earlier and posted by Jim on SF Yahoo Group:

This is from an hour ago (4:00). Cher clearly seems to be laying an egg, although she hasn't given us a clear view to count the eggs since then to indicate whether she completed laying the egg or not.

The egg on our left seems brighter than the others, but it's hard to tell in this light.

Although she isn't completely on all of the eggs at the moment, her behavior does seem different. About ten minutes ago she pulled in the egg on the right with her beak, which I haven't seen her do yet.

Cheers

Jim

5:58pm - Dan is on eggs. Cher comes in with prey. Dan stayed, Cher departed with prey.

Original 3 eggs are approximately 3 days overdue at this point.

I am so happy here
I have not been able to watch but put a lot o f time in here. With tongue in cheek, I said she looked bottom heavy , and I said maybe there will be a new clutch.

I am just thrilled at this turn of events I know she is not Lil, but this is exciting

No she's not but I'd rather see Dan with offspring than sitting on those other eggs for months on end waiting for them to hatch like Pa did last year.

I think they were working on getting permission to remove the eggs per a post from Glenn Stewart back on 3/22.

This is going to get interesting because we don't know how many eggs she will lay, and they are already in hard incubation!

I'll just say...(again)..."I'm not surprised"!!!

Now...I really, really really, hope they will remove those 3 eggs. I would hate for Cher's egg(s) to be jeopardized because of the other 3. It is really gonna be interesting to see how this plays out...You are so right, mwplay...Dan is in hard incubation mode....geeeeeeez...

I pray they don't drag their feet on this one...and with the holiday weekend, we could have 2 eggs (+3) by Monday!!!!

Oh...and this will test that other theory..cher will "feel" 4 eggs under her..will that tell her body to stop production?

Now that she laid an egg, based on some posts I'm reading, I do not believe the eggs will be removed. If she had not laid, and approval was given by state to remove, my guess it would be a different story. We were just a few days past anticipated hatch. Many thought the eggs would not hatch, but in the off chance they did, I think there was a plan to wait until that was out of the question.

Agreed on the theory part - I had posted that on the Yahoo group. Glenn's partial response to group: "The discussion earlier hinged on the belief among some prominent falcon biologists that a peregrine begins to "shut down" her laying upon feeling two eggs under her (remember egg three is already on the way when #2 is laid). The extent to which Cher is "feeling" the eggs is in question. Now that she has put an egg in the scrape herself, will she be more careful about her incubation?" I wonder how many she will lay?

Few things I've noticed over the last 2 days:

She did what seemed like real nest exchanges with Dan. She may not have incubated correctly, but it seemed like she would stay in the scrape.

Yesterday, I thought we had a different falcon on the nest. She had an intense bonding session with Dan - very low bowing, beaking, echupping over the eggs. When she got on the eggs, she tucked them under and wiggled down - very unlike Cher. I emailed someone asking their opinion, and of course, that's when she decides to kick and not cover all the eggs.

Today, when there was a question if she had laid an egg, before she would give the big reveal, she repositioned herself (she had not been doing "normal" rotating), and I noticed her feet were curled. I had not seen that before. She also seemed to change her position about every 15 minutes. She still needs some work on her incubating skills. After she laid, she had the new egg and one other on either side of her wings instead of under her.

And lastly, I noticed when it went dark, she was on the nest versus Dan. Prior to tonight, to my knowledge, it had always been Dan on the night shift. Amazing how quickly the dynamics changed here.

I'm still amazed she laid today. I had the cam up and checked it periodically, and had shut it down about 30 minutes before I got an alert. Only thing I had noticed earlier in the day was Cher was on the nest panting - it was around 11:45. I had also checked San Jose and found Clara sunbathing at the same time. It was warm today, but not "hot" enough for Cher to be panting so hard. And, interesting she used the same scrape with the other eggs versus digging her own cup.... Remember Durand that one year with 2 in one cup and 3 in the other?

How this all unfolds is going to be very interesting.

Here comes the first of many questions if they did go get the eggs would it be hard now to figue which ones to get now since she laid one?

Good question Kitten. I thought about that earlier.

The new egg today was much brighter in my picture, it's the egg on the left closest to the cam. I think 2 look pretty red and 2 look paler in color, but the cam sometimes has funny colors depending on the light in the nest area. Also, Cher moved the eggs around a bit after she laid it. She kicked a little and pulled others under her. At one point, she had 2 eggs under her and 1 on either side of her wings. I'm hoping now that she has laid her own egg, her incubation skills will improve...hoping!

Well, this is a surprising turn of events!

I think removing Lil's eggs is now out of the question. But what if those eggs still are viable and do hatch in a few days? Not likely but we have been surprised more than once by falcons so . . .

Great observations, mwplay..

DEF, I posed that same question..if even one of Lil's eggs is viable and it hatches and Cher continues to lay, you're gonna have a growing chick and 35 days (at least) incubation of Cher's egg(s)..So now what. by the time Cher's egg or eggs are ready to hatch, you've got a chick or chicks approaching fledge.

If they decide to remove the 3 eggs, I am sure they will know how to tell them apart. I just hope they decide quickly, which I know isn't always easy because of all the red tape..

That's exactly what I was thinking, Kitten. Some eggs are pretty beat-up looking when they're first laid! :girlcrazy:

By the looks of it I would say the one in front-center. It is brightest in colour, the other three look much darker(dirtier).

I have always wondered , what if at leaat one of eggs hatches and they are incubating others. they should remove that chick if it happens and put it in another nest , but make sure it is well fed a nd monitor it.

and if they remove the eggs , hopefully they will candle them to see if any are viable

I always thought they should remove the eggs and put in dummie eggs. maybe they do not have an incubator , but I would think they would

But then what do I know. :girlcrazy: :girlcrazy:

What will be will be , so they tell me
