Post from Glenn's blog regarding Haya. Little more information - they now think she was probably electrocuted.

HAYA: Rest in Peace
In Raptor Rehabilitation on March 29, 2013 at 11:45 am

Well, we lost her. It was one of those things that can happen to any raptor at any time. I posted to the nest camera discussion groups that she was hit by a car but upon further inspection that seems not to be the case. A headless pigeon was found near her body under the Hegenberger overpass. Thanks to the bands that she wore, identification was easy. Due to nearby traffic it was easy to assume that she was hit and killed instantly on the roadway while trying to control and eat a recently captured pigeon. But she had burns on both feet and on her head making us now think that she was probably electrocuted. If she touched one wire with a wingtip and the pigeon’s wing touched another wire, the electrical current passing through her would have been tremendous. There was a utility pole above her as well as a vehicle overpass.

These things happen and there is nothing in the world we can do to prevent it short of burying all the utility wires. After seeing the x-rays of her injury, the second fracture at the site of a bone infection, and her poor plumage after months of medical treatment, I never thought I would see the day when she was released successfully. The Lindsay Museum did a heroic job of treating her. Jim DeRoque put in the time to physically condition her and molt her through to a new set of feathers. And Haya pushed all the way through to once again live like a peregrine with her face freely looking in to the wind. What happened to her could have–and does–happen to raptors every single day. She had an accident on the utility wires that had nothing at all to do with her injury, treatment, or rehabilitation.

3/29/13 Update on SFO.

It was foggy along the coast and at the first coastal bench where I usually use a pasture for exercising flights. I proceeded further up to the second coastal bench where I found sunshine. There are no fence posts at the higher meadow so I took out the car perch and set it on a little rise.
By the time I got the telemetry on, the fog was creeping across my grassy flat. About 150 yards out SFO started to come (not because he loves me but because he knows I have the food) so I pulled out the lure and swung it. Instead of dropping it for him, I swung it toward him then pulled it. He made a little circle up and away and came back past. I pulled it one more time and then dropped it for him. Two passes--I was impressed.
The lure was prepped with a quail wing and a little bit of breast meat so I picked him up with the lure and let him finish before putting him down on a little bush and hurrying back toward the other side of the meadow. The fog was still hanging and again, he came before losing a view of me. I pulled the lure and watched him pull up from ground level to about thirty feet while looking back over his shoulder. I'll keep pulling the lure so see if I can keep him in the air longer. I would call this slight progress even though he still holds his wing funny and still has a long way to go.
His last flight was less impressive. I set him up for the 2/10ths mile flight across the lower pasture--he perched 5 times on fence posts as he made his way toward the lure. I liked that he was able to plant clean landings on the perches but did not like that he could not seem to make the whole distance. His return trip across the pasture to the lure was better with no stops along the way. Today's shorter flights with more maneuvers looked better than I have seen so we will keep plugging away with this little guy.

FC arrives with prey, which Clara grabs and takes to the louver.

I'm starting to get concerned about these eggs.

In 2011, Clara's 3rd and 4th egg were 3/2 and 3/4. First hatch was 4/5 - 35 days from 3rd egg.

Last year (with turmoil of displacing EC), Clara's last egg was on 3/5 and first hatch was 4/8 - 35 days.

This year, last two eggs were 2/24 and 2/27. If they started hard incubation on 2/24, today is day 35. If they didn't start until 2/27, assuming 35 days, could be 4/2. All depends on when they started hard incubation.

ok, ok, it's just me starting to panic, as usual.

I want them all to hatch the same day, hopefully.

No worries Ljames. :girlyes:

I do the same thing. I just had to go over the calendar like 10 times, making sure I was counting correctly!

When I remember the little one a few years ago, I panic when there's a 3 day difference between first hatches and last hatch. Makes me really worried, so I know what you mean and how you feel.

FC just brought prey into Clara. She left the box for a few seconds, then took the prey into the scrape. She started eating in the scrape. After a few bites, she left. FC is now in the scrape taking over incubation duties...5:54PM

Clara returned at 6:01.

No hatch yet, but I'm sure will be soon.

Very excited for these 2!

Now, weather warning - we are expecting rain tomorrow, but the temps today are very mild.

I see that Clara has already returned. She doesn't like to trust the hatching to anybody else.
Well I hope that I wake up tomorrow to 4 fluffy white chicks, well fed already. :easterbsk:

Those eggs still looked pretty intact.
