Oh my, I am so glad that they have a nestbox at least. And no pen. :loveheart2:
I wish them well, but I know many of you will miss watching them on cam. :girlsad3:

Hide and Seek

Over the winter DGIF biologists accessed the ledge to perform maintenance on the Falcon Cam and to fashion a new fledge pen for the upcoming nesting season. This work was completed in December and we continued to see both adult falcons in the area and frequenting the nest ledge atop the Riverfront Plaza.

As the breeding season drew closer we expected to see more and more frequent visits to the nest box as the adults prepared for breeding. Although we continued to see them around Downtown we were not seeing them in and around the nest box. In past years the pair has occasionally waited until just before they were ready to lay eggs before appearing at the box so we continued to watch and wait.

Reports from observers downtown indicated that the birds were becoming very active. DGIF biologists manning the camera noticed the female regularly perched on a vertical opening along the top of the Southeastern face of the One James River Plaza building (the Dominion Building). The female was noted using the same opening on a number of occasions over a period of weeks and finally today we watched her walk into the opening and remain there for well over two hours. This seemed to be a strong indication that the birds had found a new nest site. DGIF contacted personnel at the building and they investigated confirming that the birds were indeed nesting here…and had three eggs!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :tearhair So that's why the cam is pointed over there..boy, did they show us...and they had been such frequent visitors at the box for a while...shame on them!! 3 eggs already? LOL..geeeeeez they better move the cam over there!!! LOL

(Gosh, I hope the rest of the VA birds don't rebel on us...first the eagles, now the falcons.. :thud

thanks Barb!!!

This is exactly what our female at bell tower did in Edmonton. she abandoned box and went into one of those openings on building. You can see from Bell, that they are very protected.

So good luck to them. They may be able to fly off better there???what do biologists think

Now I do not know what your biologists are like but Gord went up an d could get out there and they have the portable cam there

Now Edmonton people who man cams are not very good at doing it Right but in the states they do a better job.

Yep, it's one of them. It is going to be impossible for chicks to fledge from here. It reminds me of that nest in Rome. I wonder if they have a ledge there.

It is somewhat encouraging to read that "we don't know if we will be able to install a camera to watch them". I guess that isn't out of the question. Regardless, I am happy to see that they do have a nestbox & 5 eggs, so at least they're nesting & their eggs shouldn't be rolling off a ledge. It was disappointing to read that there will probably be a problem with them fledging, though.

Thanks Ingrid. Although this group sees five egg clutches fairly often, it is really unusual for us in VA. Very exciting!!

there is a lip there for them to perch on. It is like bell tower in Edmonton but not as wide.
I think this is actually a great place. They are protected from elements and can fly out an d go to nest opening. They can go up to signs and onto roof.

and that wall does not look like it goes all the way back so i they may be able to get to other openings through back. Can someone find out>???

Me too Bev. I think that opening in the back is for people doing maintenance, not falcons.

I drove by there yesterday and I saw osprey in the sky, but no falcons. I met a man last weekend who has an office across the square on a top floor and keeps good track of them. It was fun talking to him.

five eggs in new nest

Five eggs expected to hatch at new nest next week
Posted: Friday, April 12, 2013 12:00 am | Updated: 12:40 pm, Fri Apr 12, 2013.

BY REX SPRINGSTON Richmond Times-Dispatch

You often get a new house when your family grows. That’s certainly the case with Ozzie and Harriet, Richmond’s rare falcon pair.

The peregrine falcons moved their nest this year from a 21st-story walkway at Riverfront Plaza by the James River to a 22nd-story opening in the east wall of Dominion Virginia Power’s building at Seventh and East Cary streets.

Harriet laid five eggs last month, her most ever. The norm is three or four. The eggs should hatch next week, and the youngsters should take wing in late May.

Richmond is becoming known for its eagles, herons and purple martins. But for “sheer magnificence,” it’s hard to beat the speedy, acrobatic falcons, said Barbara Slatcher, a Hanover County bird aficionado.

Eagle-eye viewers downtown occasionally spot the falcons diving, climbing and chasing birds to eat. When people turn out to watch thousands of purple martins roost at Shockoe Bottom each summer, the show often features a falcon zooming in to pick off a martin or two.

“Most people don’t ever see a falcon,” Slatcher said, “and to have them in the city of Richmond so everyone gets to see them is pretty unique.”

Considered the world’s fastest animal, the peregrine falcon is a crow-size predator that can dive-bomb a prey bird at 200 mph.

Devastated by pesticides after World War II, peregrines remain so rare that scientists are trying to help them come back.

There are more than 800 bald eagle nests in Virginia, but only 22 peregrine falcon nests. The downtown nest is the only one in the Richmond area.

People often mistake common hawks for the falcons, but the next closest falcon nest is on the Benjamin Harrison Bridge near Hopewell.

“Peregrine” means likely to wander, referring to the birds’ tendency to fly great distances. Ozzie and Harriet have also wandered about downtown. The Dominion building is their third nest site — and they have checked other places, including the Lee Bridge — since they settled in Richmond in 2003.

“That’s typical behavior,” said Bryan Watts, a bird expert with the Center for Conservation Biology, a research and education group. For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, falcons like to move among nest sites, or eyries.

Richmond’s high-rises substitute for the cliffs that peregrines historically nested in, said Sergio Harding, a biologist with the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The Dominion site, with no walkway to hop around on — “just a sheer drop to the bottom,” Harding said — could prove challenging to the fledglings as well as people on the ground who will try to keep them out of traffic and other trouble when the youngsters take those first flights.

Ozzie is one of several falcons that experts raised and released from atop the Dominion building in 2000-2002.

Dan Genest, a Dominion spokesman, said, “The feeling of the employees I’ve talked to is it’s great that they finally came home.”

Thanks Kitten! I'm hoping DGIF will move the cam over so at least we know when they are about to fledge. It's going to be an interesting year.

Thanks for posting that link, SGB! Any idea what work they were doing up there? Maybe installing a cam? :teehee:

Harriet sure does have some sideburns--never really noticed before!

From the website... :sum9: :sum9: :sum9:

Saturday, April 13, 2013

On Thursday April 11th Biologists with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), with the assistance of Dominion personnel, installed two webcams at the peregrine falcon nest box on the 22nd floor of the Dominion Building at One James River Plaza in Downtown Richmond.

These two cameras will allow biologists to monitor the progress of the birds through their breeding cycle and provide the public with an opportunity to see the day to day lives of these amazing birds of prey. This project is jointly sponsored by VDGIF and Dominion. With the assistance of the University of Virginia Long Term Ecological Research project, live images from the camera will be made available to the public. We are working on the technical aspects of making these images available and hope to have it up and running soon. DGIF biologists will post information and updates through the breeding season.

The pair had laid a five egg clutch for the first time. The camera allowed us to see that one of these eggs was not being incubated through much of the day on Friday. On Friday evening at approximately 7:30 pm we could see that only four eggs remained in the nest box. Falcons will often remove non-viable eggs from the nest and we suspect that is what occurred. A DGIF biologist searched the ground underneath the nesting area on Saturday morning and found no sign of the egg. The female continues to incubate the remaining four eggs. Peregrine falcons typically incubate their eggs for 33-35 days and we expect these eggs to hatch sometime next week.
