I got this article in my email today and thought that you might be interested in in Injured endangered Peregrine Falcon being treated in Howell
He’s a rare bird and he’s getting first class treatment at a local nature preserve.
A male Peregrine Falcon, one of as few as two dozen in all of Michigan, is receiving medical treatment at the Howell Nature Center’s wildlife rehabilitation clinic after being found, down and injured Tuesday on the streets of Detroit.
Someone saw him on the street and when they noticed he hadn’t moved in about two hours, they contacted the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society, which, in turn, brought him to us,” nature center Director Dana DeBenham said.
After several days of treatment, the falcon is now in recovery. DeBenham believes he could be released from care sometime early next week.
But the questions are where where and to whom.
Because they’re an endangered species in the state, each Peregrine Falcon is identified with bands on both legs.
Though his identity hasn’t officially been confirmed, DeBenham believes the falcon being treated is Allegro,( son of the late greats Zenith & Bullet) a bird who nests at Whittier Park, a high rise senior center on the Detroit riverfront.
Picture & more here:.

Thanks for sharing that article, Kitten. I'm sure glad people didn't just go about their business & ignore him. Sounds like this story will have a happy ending!

Its also interesting that peregrines aren't as plentiful in Michigan as they now are in other places--like Cleveland, for example.

UPDATE it is for sure Allegro

We've been treating him like a king," said veterinarian Maxine Biwer, wildlife rehabilitation supervisor at the nature center. "He gets chopped mice -- no guts, no fur."

I just received some bad news about Allegro. Chris Becher of the MDNR called me this morning and said the Xrays show that he has a fractured wingtip as well as a problem with his right foot. He will be in rehab for several weeks.

In the meantime, when Chris and I checked the Whittier Building in Detroit yesterday, there was a new male on site. He is banded, but we have not been able to identify him, yet. Miriam is still there, but no eggs so far.

Kitten, I don't think you're bad for thinking this way. If there's a new male at his nest, its probably best that he not be released for a while to make sure he's good & strong when he leaves.

Howell Nature Center Cares For Injured, Endangered Falcon Allegro
April 7, 2013

4/7/13 - The Howell Nature Center says it’s happy to report that an endangered Peregrine Falcon is making a speedy recovery in its Wildlife Infirmary. Allegro was found in downtown Detroit this past week with injuries from an apparent collision. Nature Center staff anticipates Allegro to make a full and speedy recovery so that he can be released near his nest- and his mate Miriam- in Detroit very soon. All peregrine falcons east of the Mississippi River are believed to have been wiped out by the use of the pesticide DDT in the 1960’s. Restoration efforts got the raptor removed from the national endangered species list in 1999, but they are still considered endangered in Michigan. Allegro is a tagged falcon who was discovered injured on the ground in downtown Detroit. He may have suffered some trauma from a collision and is showing some paralysis in his right foot. However, Nature Center officials say he is eating well and is expected to make a quick recovery. (TD

kittenface, perhaps the reporter spoke to someone before the Xrays of Allegro were taken on Friday. I will post updates as I get them.

Wing fracture delays release of rare falcon
Allegro, the peregrine falcon being treated at the Howell Conference and Nature Center, is getting stronger daily, but a slight wing fracture will keep the bird from returning to its Detroit home anytime soon.
