Wonderful!! Thank goodness for concerned citizens--they've saved a number of our falcons! Cheers to all the concerned citizens out there! :corkpop:

I knew that it would be Red Boy if anybody got into trouble. I'm glad that I didn't see him fall off. In fact, I only saw 2 every time I looked but didn't know that he was gone. I'm so glad that he has been recovered and is ok. I just saw the other two have a meal and I bet they were saying, hey I don't really miss him that much anymore, what about you??

Glenn Stewart just posted an update to the SJ Yahoo Group on 90/P "Red Boy"

90/P--Next Steps

The bird is fine. He is perched quietly in a large sky kennel with no views of humans, etc. He will get a quail cut up into small pieces in the morning and I expect him to eat it during the morning. The wind (likely entirely responsible for his departure from the ledge today) will be blowing 20+ mph tomorrow and then knock down to about half that on Tuesday and Wednesday so I think he will have a day off in summer camp before going back to the roof. I replace "picked up" birds like this to the roof above the nest ledge. It is just like being on the nest ledge except that he will not have to compete with the brothers for food. The parents perch above that roof all the time so will know he is there and he will flap his wings and call to them for food. The downside for us is that we will not be able to see him on camera. (Please note there is no way to replace him to the nest ledge without the very real possibility of prematurely fledging another young).

Side note: The system worked exactly the way it wass supposed to today . A concerned citizen called Animal Control. They picked him up and took him to the wildlife center. We were in touch with Animal Control and will re-unite him with his nestmates. (My permits allow me to do so at this location) In addition, John & Alicia, Deborah, Elaine, Prabha, Craig, Lori, the entire Bianchi family, and Sue and Jack Johnson, showed up in person to conduct a search until we learned he was already in good hands. Thanks all for your efforts and see you at fledge watch. --glenn@scpbrg

:teehee:

Thanks for posting Glenn's final update, mwplay! Yes, it wouldn't be easy to return him to the nest ledge but at this point in time they would have to be concerned about other pre-mature fledges. He's in good hands! :loveshow:

Video and Educational Information:

Glenn Stewart posted the following information on the SJ Yahoo group this morning:

As we watch the brothers share what appears to be a starling, we can see the length of the wing feathers (primary flight feathers) in comparison to the length of the tail--they are shorter. When these feathers are fully emerged the wingtips will be just half an inch shorter than the tail when folded. But the nestlings will fledge before the feathers achieve their full length making them appear to have rounded wingtips and moth-like flight during their first week or two on the wing. --glenn@scpbrg

And to compliment the post, here is a video of the brothers eating:

Reviewing posts on the SJ Yahoo Group today, Glenn returned 90/P to the roof at City Hall today. Sounds like the release went well and the parents are aware of his location!

Glad to hear about Red Boy. He must be totally confused about what's happening to him.

From SJ Yahoo Group:

The votes are in and the three peregrine falcon chicks born atop San Jose City Hall have been given names:

*Comet (yellow leg band, #U/50) – nominated by Dakota, Grade 1 at Hayes Elementary School, San Jose

*Orion (silver leg band, #95/S) – nominated by Nathaniel, Grade 3, Willow Glen Elementary School, San Jose

*Striker (red leg band, #90/P) –nominated by Lauren and Kathleen, Grade 4, Holly Oak Elementary School, San Jose

The falcon naming contest is sponsored by the Office of Mayor Chuck Reed, City of San Jose, and UC-Santa Cruz's Predatory Bird Research Group. This year's judges included reps from the Children's Discovery Museum, Happy Hollow Foundation and Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, the former San Jose Peregrine Falcon Alliance, Santa Clara County Office of Education, as well as Sal Pizarro from the Mercury News and our own expert biologist, Glenn Stewart, of UC-Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group. Winners will receive a commendation from the Mayor, two free passes to Happy Hollow Park & Zoo and a school assembly featuring Glenn Stewart.

All nine finalists' entries can be seen online here: http://sanjoseperegrines.editme.com/2013-Naming-Poll. Winners and finalists have all been notified.

And yes, Striker has already attempted to strike out on his own...

He is gorgeous & thanks for sharing those pics with us, ljames! :flirty:

Thanks for sharing the names with us mwplay. I like the names, especially Orion! How could you not like a name that reminds you of a precious youngster at another nest!
:loveshow:

Just a quick update:

1) Striker has "re-fledged" from his position on the roof.
2) Orion fledged early this morning. Just now, they posted an update that he was being harassed by crows and flew. Landed on the ground and watchers are observing and have rescue box.
3) Comet is still at home, has made it to the upper ledge and is eating:

Comet fledged and went to ground. Both Orion and Comet were returned to the roof of SJ City Hall.

Last update on Striker was he was on a louver near the mayor's office.

Here's a really great page that lists all the banding information and fledge watch updates:

Thanks for the link. I have been trying to read the SJ forum to keep up. Pray they all stay safe. I know there are many there who are looking after them. Nothing we can do now behind a computer, well there was never anything we could do anyway, but it felt like it.

Striker was lost and found this Monday morning. I could feel the panic in the message post. Couldn't find him when they first arrived. He seems to love being in the news and they found him on the Knight-Ridder building. The other two are apparently close to or on City Hall.

Thanks, Bonnie! (There's one in every crowd, isn't there?)

They have had quite a time with these three boys. Orion was missing most of yesterday and he likes the news, too. Found on Knight Ridder.
