Nap time for Orange, now that she's been fed. And a big thanks to Craig for delivering today's three-course dinner.

Thanks, Greg, for providing the span of dates when the new male appeared. And thanks, mw, for locating the first pictures of the new male on April 24.

Red Girl was just in the nest box, and now it's Orange.

Red Girl is beautiful.

She looks like her mom.

Have been out since 5:00. SO happy that Orange has been fed, and Red Girl is paying attention to her. Did Craig decide against the ramp, Kim?

Jane, I think they figured Red Girl was feeding her from the ledge. She grabbed that food from Red Girl. Bless Craig for the goodies today!! I'm glad they accepted it. I just got home as well.

Not sure about the ramp. He may have decided against since there'd be a chance the other chicks would jump and since he saw that she was getting some food. Also she did get up there a couple times yesterday and I would imagine by sometime today she should be able to get up there without any problems?

I sure wish they would all come back inside the box. Not just because the feedings would happen in there but because they provide such comic relief for those of us stuck in an office all day! I love watching them at this age when they do all their flapping and turning their heads sideways watching each other and pouncing on food like they're attacking it, etc. etc. :)

Finally, some action in the nest box!

And then more action as Orange swipes some food from the ledge and Red Girl jumps down into the nest box to try and retrieve it. Feisty Orange managed to keep the food despite RG's best efforts to get it back!

Good for her!! Oh! looks like a Baltimore Oriole. Thanks so much Ethel for the early pictures. I can never get here early. Too many chores. So glad to see her feistiness.

Thanks for the earlier reports, everyone. Looks like Orange and somebody are sacked out in the lower left corner right now.

We may not see much of the new male, but he's producing substantial evidence of his presence. Prey taken in the last 24 hours (most if not all today) includes Baltimore oriole shown above, pigeon, nighthawk, red-bellied woodpecker, and on the sidewalk below the nest box this morning, yellow-billed cuckoo, black-billed cuckoo, and gray catbird. The last three were in perfect condition and, like last week's whip-poor-will, have been delivered to the Delaware Museum of Natural History for its collections.

Red Girl has caught cuckoos on her own before but I doubt that she caught today's because she would not have dropped them before feeding them to the chicks. I think that all these whole birds are the result of botched aerial food passes between the new male returning with prey and Red Girl. They haven't been together long enough to get their timing down.

The same analysis applies to the whole ruddy duck drake a couple of weeks ago, which Kim noted could have been caught by CJ even though it weighed 1.2 lbs. (a little heavier than the 1 lb. Cooper's Hawk that CJ caught two years ago). It probably was a male that caught the duck, but the new one, not CJ. The falcons should exchange heavy stuff like that on a roof. It's not doing the chicks any good lying on the sidewalk or a garage roof.

On the bright side the new male appears to be an able hunter like CJ and committed to bringing food back to the family. He's festy like CJ too. Now that I think of it, it must have been the new guy who gave the great blue heron a hard time last week.

Thanks for that quite detailed report, Greg. I have been busy outside for most of the day, but able to check in a couple times. Haven't seen any activity since this morning. And am looking again at the pictures from this morning. Am not convinced that's Red Girl. Looking at the left leg in the one picture, but it's a little blurry. Am having trouble seeing a band there. Maybe somebody else can give their thoughts on this.

Looks like Red Girl to me Jane because in the last picture you can see the green from the black over green band on the left leg.

Great captures Ethel!!!

Thanks for your opinion, Kim. I guess it's Red Girl, after looking at that picture more. Thought the bird was big. Still not seeing any signs of the chicks.

It looked like Orange just flapped and jumped to the ledge from halfway to the back of the box.

Well, looks like OG in her favorite corner again. Was asleep a little bit ago, but is awake now. Greg I am so happy that you are taking the "fallen" birds to the Museum of Natural History. What a very thoughtful and useful thing to do. I hope they display them well. Maybe a plaque referring to Falcon food gone awry. LOL!!!
