OH BOY- OH BOY- OH BOY!! Guinevere's first hatch- And Zeus is a daddy!!

I am really off my game today...somehow I managed to delete all my pics of the baby coming out of the shell...Hope somebody else got it..

There were a few moments that I thought Guinevere was not gonna pull it under her...She stayed on the eggs and just ignored the baby...I think everything is ok now....except my cam keeps freezing..

I watched for a while hoping to get a peek at the newborn and I did :dancingegg:

It's hard to tell wxactly where the baby ends and the light egg begins though lol!

Well, this is different...Zeus is incubating the discarded egg shell... :teehee:

When Zeus came in he had that "What am I supposed to do!" look. He was in for about 5 minutes, left, came back and went and hovered over, then lay on the broken eggshell in the corner. :girlcrazy:

He left again and then Mom came back. Poor guy looked confused.

He stayed right here for a few minutes...he's now back up on the ledge..

Last night G sat on the eggs. She also spent a lot of time picking at her chest. Maybe she is changing her brood patch from Egg mode to Eyass mode.

9:05 am Definitely only one hatch. ( I am sure of this because after staring at the white egg for weeks, I know it pretty well. :eggface:

) Zeus is on the ledge, looking around nervously, looking at the nest, looking around, looking at his toes, as if they would provide an answer. He stretches a leg, then decides to preen, and the preening seems to give him some confidence, which is promptly destroyed as soon as he looks at the nest again. He looks around nervously, looks out, probably hoping to spot Guinevere's return. ( I assume she is hunting for breakfast.) The chick moves. He looks at it and then, moving one leg at a time, hops S L O W L Y into the nest. He looks at the eyass and the eggs, walks but does not sit down. After a couple of minutes, he hops back onto the ledge. After more minutes of ledge time, he goes back into the nest, this time for longer. Then back on the ledge. The chick moves several times, but does not appear distressed. Around 9:37, Zeus goes back into the box, goes off cam in the box, and then moves into sight and appears to be incubating the eggs. By 9:55 he appears to be incubating all the eggs and the eyass. I have to go but I will try to post later.

Great description of Zeus, sbwatcher...That's exactly what he was doing...bless his heart...LOL..Hopefully, he'll get the hang of this..

I'm guessing I got here too late this morning to catch breakfast!!! I tried enlarging my pics to see if I could see any pips with the other 3 eggs...naw..didn't work..

Zeus and the baby...

Zeus left at 11:37, and I missed Guinevere's arrival, which was 11:39 at the latest. If there was a feed, I missed it, but if there was one it must have been pretty quick. I don't know if newborn peregrines need to eat much in their first day or two of life. G has been hovering, opening her beak ( looks like noisemaking to me ) doing a little eggshoving, and looking at the baby. I don't know what is normal behavior after a hatch, so I am relying on other folks. I need to leave for several hours, will try to watch this evening IF I can get back.

Thanks sbwatcher...a new hatch really is ok for the first 24 hrs (or so they say)...but, generally they don't wait that long for their first feed.

I haven't seen one...but, I haven't kept this cam up to watch for a feed because it freezes so much and I forget to refresh..

Anyway, we still have 1 baby, 3 eggs, Zeus, and an Update sign that is really annoying...

I find it curious that everytime I check the cam, I find Zeus...Where is Guinevere? I wonder if the fact that Zephyr NEVER wanted to leave the kids has anything to do with Zeus being here? Is that the pattern that Ms G. got used too?

Or maybe, I'm just checking the cam at all the wrong times...

Zeus is back down with the baby and eggs now...YEA...
