WOW !! What an exciting day we've had today! A group of 14 of us gathered to watch over the babies, and see Mo's release, including the parking garage maintenance man, who has enjoyed watching the peregrines over the years, and Rebecca, the lady who found Mo injured along a street. (Thanks again, Rebecca!!)
The babies are actually doing well, especially Sketch. He has taken 3 short flights and is now resting on a window sill of his "home building", about 2 stories below the nest box. Ice has had quite a time, flying first to a steep church roof (bad), then to a shallow window ledge of a local bank - peeping in the windows as he ran back and forth along the ledge (bad), and now is on a rung of a metal ladder fixed to the side of a chimney. (?) Two babies, Junior and Stout, remain on the ledge just below the nest box, flapping away.
Mo was SO ready to go when he got here in a carrier. Chad Saladin couldn't even open the carrier door - Mo was bumping against it, being eager to get out. Mo's release went smoothly, and actually Mystic had her back turned, feeding babies. Mo flew around a bit, seeming to enjoy the exercise. But then he flew over to one of Mystic's caches, grabbed it and flew off... (We decided he must not have been fed this morning). Well, Mystic noticed this and flew after him aggressively. We thought it was all about the food, but through the day, she became aggressive with him several times. Chad Saladin said Mystic is afraid Mo wont recognize his babies, some of which have fledged. Mystic did fly over to him a couple times when he was away from the nestbox, and flew with him a couple times also. We are all hoping there will just be a short time of adjustment and things will be back to normal again... (fingers crossed !) There is actually more to tell, but I will let the others put in their view of things.
