You've got that right! I hadn't seen much movement out of the new hatch, but now it turned over, so I'm relieved!

I think Harriet chewed that part of the shell off. Just hope it isn't interferring with the hatching process.

Thanks for being here, Catwoman...how much has she been picking at this other egg...it reminds me way too much of the failed hatch this past Monday...

This is way too much like the first hatch...I wonder if the baby is stuck to the shell? You can see the little mouth opening and closing...

You can clearly see the chick inside the egg and its moving. What a bummer that this nest is hard to get to (I think) Maybe it could be helped? Who knows..

AWWW! I wish she would let it hatch on it's own...Pulling them out to soon can be fatal!

The new baby is starting to fluff up...I am not hopeful for the 4th hatch.

You can see Mom's black talons..Baby #1 must be on her foot...

New update, with a good description of the hatching process. They haven't addressed the 4th egg yet. I hope they will and maybe give some possible reasons for what has happened. It was very sad to see the chick moving, knowing that it probably would not survive. I guess Harriet knew something was wrong. Why leave one hatching egg alone, yet pick at the other..

Thanks for the feed pics, ferenz..I am very thankful that we appear to have 2 healthy chicks here!!! Still amazes me that she laid a second clutch and that all 4 eggs were fertile..

VDGIF has posted another update regarding the failed hatch of the 4th egg:

Very sad since you could tell the chick was alive..and such a mystery. I can't say I've ever seen anything like this before. I know birds have a poor sense of smell..but what about taste? Could Harriet "taste" that there was something wrong with this chick by putting her tongue in the pip? Clearly she allowed two normal hatches and two hatches that failed.

Gonna have to research...not even sure where to start..

sorry I did not have cam up but I am glad I did not . It would have broken my heart .

We saw this another year , with the chicks , I am thinking something in their diet while away. I have always said we cannot be complacent

I am glad for 2 here.
these are remarkable parents, and I trust their judgement at why they did what they did.

I have seen parents help chicks before. It is risky but they know things we do not.

God speed little almost s .

happy for the 2 that are here :loveshow:

Well, I totally missed all today's action. I am actually thrilled we have two healthy chicks! Given the problems here, feeling pretty lucky! Thanks to DGIF for there great coverage and explanation of what happened. It is certainly unusual behavior that we have not seen on this forum, but we seem to see a lot of it from this pair. Hopefully we will learn something from the chick remains of the first clutch to help explain all this. How sad to have them alive in the egg like that, but we have seen them fully hatch and then die which was awful.

We had a bad storm Bev, but it was quick. Looks like the cam will take some time to dry out though...
