Thanks KF...I thought it was a really good post with some really good pics..for those who don't have FB, here it is:

SW stands for "Strong Will"

After not seeing SW all day yesterday and then seeing her stand on her “last leg” today, I couldn’t help but think that SW literally stands for “Strong Will”! While we have reason to have continuing reservations about her fate with that very swollen left foot that has left her hobbled, respectful was the predominant feeling I experienced over sadness as I watched her today doing all she could to manage her injury to survive and to retain her site and mate. If work didn’t get in the way I think I would have stayed to relish whatever time we have left to watch the reigning “Queen of the TT”.

I enjoyed the technology of getting to communicate through the CMNH forum with our separate perspectives as forum members watched on cam. Thanks everyone—you guys are incredible! It’s going to be tough not getting back to this site through the next week (d/t work demands and pre-arranged plans with family).

Anyway, about today…as I posted on the forum I arrived as Boomer took position on a ledge adjacent to the nest site. It struck me that he/they seem to go there especially when it rains because there’s an overhang above that blocks them particularly when the wind is pushing east to west. After awhile, I caught a flash of SW flying up near him (although, in the distance and with the rain I didn’t know it was her at first, and she seemed to land and perch well enough that it briefly crossed my mind that it could be another female). It quickly became apparent that it was her, as she remained standing but favored the right foot and supported herself against the building while stretching and preening. She whined at Boomer, but he mostly ignored her and went about his business of preening. After some time passed Boomer flew back to the tray while SW remained on the ledge. She flew off and returned to a ledge further away and looked wetter than before (she was a little damp from the rain but now looked soaked after it had stopped raining), so I would assume she found a place to bathe somewhere. I stayed out of the close window hoping that she would fly to the nest to join Boomer, but I saw her take off and fly out of view and then had to go.

Boomer’s molt is obvious as he dropped a tail feather as he was preening on the nest tray. He also did quite a bit of gaping during the time that he was at the tray, which is thought to equalize air pressure in the bird’s ears to adjust to changes in barometric pressure. I decided against the food/medicine drop today, as the food left yesterday was untouched and the cast that was on the drawbridge where SW had been lying suggests that she is getting food (along with the fact that her crop didn’t look concave to me in my binocs and she has been active for weeks now in spite of her foot injury). Talked to Laurie from DOW who agreed with the decision to suspend supplementation.

So, SW’s hanging tough and giving us that encouraging reminder that “Where there’s a will there’s a way”!

SW is currently Lounging in the tray...It looks she arrived around 11:15 am...she first was lounging on the drawbridge (outside the tray)...and then moved to the scrape...just looking through the archives, it looks like she got up several times to preen...gonna go see if I can find a good pic...

I couldn't find a decent pic of her foot..

2 positives: she made it to the nest and she's still preening...obviously the cam doesn't give us the total picture on how she is doing

She can function nicely with one talon gone. Hope swelling is down.
I will remain positive .

You know , she could have lost it in food exchange with one of kids. Gord said sometimes this time of year is very dangerous for parents.
We saw Chase just about loose his talon this year when food got tangled in talon and Radisson ws trying to grab it. Just food for thought.

Bev's post reminded me that Harrisburg Mom was missing a talon. I don't know when she lost it, but at least the several years that I watched her it was missing.

Thanks for the captures, SGB! :dancingegg: Kinda hard to tell with a couple of pictures (& I may be mistaken), but it looks like SW is up on her feet rather than standing like a baby.
