Osprey Diary 23 March
Posted on March 23, 2014 by rangeremma

Our male osprey is really settling into his role here at Loch of the Lowes, bonding with the nest site whilst he awaits a mate to join him.

He was back at the nest at 5.30am , and spent most of the morning going to and fro bringing is sticks and fresh moss clumps to reinforce and decorate the nest. This is classic early breeding season behaviour. He ahs even been doing some excavation of the nest cup- lying on his chest and kicking with his legs in a comical but effective way to deepen the centre.

Still no sign of his usual mate, or any other female osprey as yet, but we are still really only in the early part of the typical osprey arrivals window, so we are not yet concerned at all.

Oh No... I have't flipped over to blog yet because I've been watching..

I see last entry was on 3/30 and male has been flirting with another female. He's been away from his nest for a few days courting other female.

This one flew in this morning. I looked at cam & bird was there calling. Flew off, then came back.

This is the first they've had 2 on this nest to my knowledge.

Oh, there's a meal. 7:25am, I think and if not a meal, at least another mating.

Well, I think this might be Lady. He's sure mating with her a lot. That's like 4 times in 20 something minutes.

Unless this is a completely different pair.

7:29am local time/11:29pm PT.

They are zooming in on her. I think they do retinal scans to confirm it is her. I'm really hoping it's her. I know in the past they looked for lightening bolt pattern on her.

Really hoping.
