I'm pretty sure the white stuff is dried poop...I've seen it on several new eggs so far this season...

maybe these females that are "pooping" prior to egg lay have figured it out. When I watched Salt Lake City lay #4 last night, she went and pooped in the corner first...LOL

Dina, I'm by far an expert but I don't think color is related to diet but rather the genetics of the female (and the species, of course). Pigment is added to the egg as the shell is forming and supposedly adds strength to the egg. In terms of the blotchiness we see in some of the eggs, I'm guessing pigment is not added consistently.

In songbirds it is believed that the darker the spot, the weaker the shell and thus more pigment is added for strength. I have no clue if that applies to falcon eggs.

I'm sure others will have more knowledge in this area...but, sounds like a great research question.

RE - dud clutches last summer '13.. yes we have the same male as 2013. he is our same male as 2012 and we had a successful hatch in 2012. the female was the same both 2012 and 2013 too. sooooo, is the male or the female more likely to be infertile? anyone have insight?... dina
