From DGIF:

The “apparatus” is comprised of a weight, bungee cords, and a plastic bottle of ice attached to the pen door. As the ice melts it releases the weight and the door is slowly pulled open by the bungee cords. Depending on the temperature on the release date, the door should open about 2-4 hours after the trigger is attached.

I suspect it will take less than 2 hours because the temperature will be in the mid 90s. I think everyone should be glued to their computer from 9 am - Noon on Tuesday. I know I will be watching.

Am wondering if the door stays open all the time after it opens in the first place. I guess ice is heavier than water??? Or does the water drain away as the ice melts? Am hoping for the best for these beautiful young birds.

Jane, I was wondering the same thing and was racking my brain to recall this info from my 7th grade science class. Unfortunately that info is buried too deep for excavation, so I went hunting the internet. Here's what I found:

Ice has a density of 0.917 g/cm at 0 C, whereas water has a density of 0.9998 g/cm at the same temperature. So at that temperature, at ordinary pressures, a volume of ice weighs less than the same volume of water. (Examples: ice cube floats in a glass of water; ice floats on surface of ponds)

So, maybe there are holes in the water bottle.....?

Good grief, I just hope the doors open.

And why don't they just open the door instead of putting the bottle there. What Am i missing?

And they have successful and safe first flights. Wish I could be on the ground watching.

Thanks for the scientific research, Susan. As for just opening the door, I wondered about that, too. Obviously the adults will not be happy campers with any sort of human intrusion with their young ones. Perhaps the fear is with the disturbance to the adults, the young would also be frightened, and might fledge from fear rather than desire. Of course, I'm not a biologist, just a concerned citizen.

Thanks Susan for looking up the ... scientific research (!)
I guess it will work since they have used this method before

Plus, they might plow them down getting out of the cage. I'm sure they know best. It will be so interesting to see how they respond to that open door.
