Two males and one female
This morning the three young falcons were ringed. In order to identify and observe them better, they each got a metal ring, bearing a unique code of 7 signs and the address of the scientific institution of reference. In Belgium, the ringing of wild birds is organised by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The programme that started in 1927 is one of the oldest programmes to observe and conserve our country's nature.
Due to a study to observe Peregrine falcons in Belgium since their return in 1994, the chicks also got a second ring. It is made of coloured plastic and bears a code of 3 visible signs. The combination of color and code allows us to identify the bird from a distance without having to capture ot or wait until it's found dead. It's of course also very important to do research on the spread of young falcons. And it also helps to derive their survival rate. These two parameters are essential to the observation programme. Being able to observe them to track them in case of problems, analysing risks, finding solutions - it's all necessary to ensure the conservation of Peregrine falcons for future generations, and for today.

This morning's mission lasted exactly 15 minutes. After ringing, the falcons were weighed and measured. This way we can determine their sex, because females are bigger and heavier than males. A little saliva and cloacal fluid was also taken from each chick in order to screen them for viruses. It's not about making them better, they are wild animals after all. The purpose is to observe and oversee the situation. The samples are analysed by the Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre (VAR). A few feathers were also taken from their flancs and put in sealed enveloppes in order to track potential pesticides and heavy metals in the organism of the falcons. These analyses are done by the colleagues of the department of biology of the University of Antwerp, in order to observe the state of our environment and guarantee the conservation of falcons in the long run. The DNA of the falcons is extracted from the feathers to combat poaching. This programme is organized by the Belgian bureau of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and by the specialized teams of the federal police and the regional authorities who are in charge of nature conservation. Cooperation is truly essential!

The nest of the Peregrines of the cathedral this year consists of two male falcons and one female falcon. The males were ringed with a yellow ring with code 'G/3' and a black ring with code 'Y/6'. The female got a black ring with code 'J/4'. They respectively weigh 588, 581 and 853 grams. We will keep tracking their evolution until they fledge, and after!

Four eggs, first egg laid on March 24. Hatching should begin any moment now, too bad the webcam isn't live.
