Tumblina

10.30 am M exited briefly - 2 eggs, 1 baby
- Holy cow - M left so fast she knocked baby across the box!
Only seeing one egg - she left so fast - others on SS saw her knock baby across floor
WEEEEEEEEE WEEEEEEEEEEE WEEEEEEEEE goes baby, CHUP CHUP CHUP goes egg.
10.38 Mom returns, lays on one egg - baby is by wall behind Moms tail - dont think M realizes it. This is too weird.

Someone has a video - they will post in RRP forum.
I'll have to WAIT (sigh) to see what happened
10.40 She is scolding, making her quack sound - still hasnt seen baby behind her :(
The egg is chupping

10.45 She still hasnt seen baby behind her. Now she is kakking again (quacking)
Maybe swallows fly too close to her box - I dunno
Michele horked something up early today. I wonder if she is sick.
10.50 am FINALLY M turns and sees baby, and I see both eggs. I hope she pulled baby under her - but I hear loud chirping - unless that is a hatchling. One egg I saw was dark brown with a white tip
10.57 NOW M picks baby up sort of and wiggles everyone into position.
BABY WAS ALONE ABOUT HALF HOUR - I hope its ok
EGG 2 is HATCHING

Perhaps I should call this baby - TUMBLES .. lol .. Tumblina

11 am Delawaerie posted on GSB SS
She picked it up with her beak, I've never seen that before

Well Del, I saw once before where a Dad falcon on another rooftop nest picked baby up and carried it back to nest after wind blew it

SS - nestlings sometimes lay on parents talons when keeping them warm, it accidently got hooked and rolled across

Sheperd, falcons frequently expell undigested bones & feathers, like owls, so that wouldn't be a reason to think Michelle is ill. :egg19:

Its hard NOT to attribute emotions to a bird I watch a lot. :sum8:

12 noon T brings prey, M takes prey out leaving Tumbles, 2 eggs - 1 with white spot
It sure looked like 2 heads of babies - but no
Stuff that kid Mama!

1 pm Uh oh T is picking at one of the eggs? After losing 2 of her 5 eggs .... I hope another chick isnt gonna die in it
Travis arrives and they chat, pip, peep, squawk awhile then Mom takes nest duty
She is standing over the eggs
Its about 70 degrees so not cold
Tumblina looks very strong! :)

May 18 video GSB chick 1
http://youtu.be/NcacdTcYpxM

2.45 pm I see 2 eggs under her - and a very active baby
M has a little siren going off under her lol
Travis is calling - he sounds very close by
Michelle is scooping pebbles and tripped - WHOOPS!

Image

3 pm M exited and Tumblina stood up, fell to the left, stood up, fell to th right - no feeding, Travis took shift

3.18 pm kak kak kak quack quack quack! Trav looks up, back n forth - something had to fly by
4.50 pm Tumblina's siren SQUEEEEE SQUEEE! just goes on n on. 1 egg is chupping. M is eating pebbles .. err .. gathering.
A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them. Ecclesiastes 3:5

Here is the May 17 video where the chick #1 is tossed across the floor
Its very near the END of this video. Travis exits perceiving danger, returns, stand over clutch, begins to settle but begins kaking and the baby rolls away.

Thanks Bev but my plate is full now! LOL!

I took these snips earlier in the afternoon around 4 pm edt. I could see movement in the egg in front, I hope the chick inside is not breech.

5.43 pm M has Baby and both eggs right in front - 1 egg has quite a hole in it. She keeps LQQKing at it.
Shift change - poor Travis - he doesnt know what to do hahaha
6 pm Feeding - takes a bite - falls over

Del, I saw movement in the egg too - it sounded like 2 chicks outside - I dunno whats going on there - Travis nibbled on it. Nice snips you got! :)

Very much so Skygirlblue, thank you. They may even mean as early as the neck muscle swelling and/or convulsions as the ("All of this takes") whole process.

Great spirit bluff has excellent cameras and microphone (except for a zoom for the nest box lol) I believe we were hearing the chicks before a pip. At least I hope so.

If I may ask, have you witnessed or know of any pefa eggshells that were overly thicker thus harder to cut and crack? Anything like that by region maybe or ambient temperature at the time the egg is formed? age of the falcon?
Thank you Skygirlblue :egg8:

Sorry I'm just now getting back with you...I personally have not witnessed a hatching where the shells appear too thick (maybe others have)..I do know it can happen (but mostly in captivity) because of too much calcium in the diet. If anything, I've seen more brittle eggs in falcons than eggs that were too hard.

RE: Age~I think we are just now learning via the cams how the age of falcons affects fertility and health of chicks. There appears to be an increase of non viable eggs and it seems chick mortality is higher in senior females...but, these are just guesses as we compare what happened in 2013 to 2014. Temperature is also a factor..eggs can freeze, then crack and crumble..humidity is another issue...there are so many variables that go into hatching.

One of my favorite vids!!!

...and another great hatching resource from one of former members, Froona, who taught us all about the wonderful world of the Peregrine..sadly, she passed away several years ago..we still miss her.

May 19 Monday
ONE LONE CHICK out of a clutch of 5. One inviable, 3 died unable to hatch.

Michelle and Travis are getting older but are so devoted to each other.
Was the family meal last nite Travis way of comforting Michelle?

4.55 am Robins are cheerily welcoming the dawn with song, I should hear Travis any moment - he's LATE! Actually I remember hearing a THUMP on the nestbox, which could have been Travis landing on the perch not vocalizing.
5.20 am M exited - I see Tumblina and 2 eggs - and not much noise.
5.30 am Feeding - Tumbles is still falling over. This baby seems weaker than most, falls asleep on egg-pillow
Eggs are still 2 eggs - I have lost faith that either one will hatch
I eggspect M to eat one of her eggs today. She'd know if chick died.

This morning I am fascinated by the Notts kid who has roofed -
and she is down on the roof below nest box and I dont think she can get back in.

-----

May 18 SONday!
7 pm Family dinner

I am just blown away! Travis brings prey to the nestbox, and feeds Michelle!
He eats some too. Travis fed Michelle, M gave bites to Baby.
I have never seen a falcon chick with such a l o n g neck! Holy cow!
This family meal was the sweetest thing.

May 19 Monday - rain, even the skies are weeping
10.20 am Feeding - Travis brot prey, Mich took it out briefly,
while she was out, Travis began munching on a now dead egg
When Mom came back T left and M fed Tumbles - who is the only survivor of 5.
Tumbles flops over a lot.
the part-hatch egg may be breach, never made it, but we had heard it chirping
Perhaps Papa Travis is trying to help it out

11.20 am M keeps tripping over chick, sending it sprawling
Feeding - its funny to see chick chewing. cmon eat lil fella. You may be a loner.
I feel sorry for GSB Mom n Dad. They have been so patient.
I think birds grieve in their own way - but not as long as humans do.

1.25 pm Mom n Dad have a serious long chat, some tiny peeps, some of that odd quack sound. - snip
Chick falls repeatedly all over - NO sound from eggs

GSBDweller has a very different interpretation than I do of 'inviable'
to me it means the egg was never fertile

GSB SS posts May 19
GSBDweller posted - 5 eggs, 2 non-viable so far, one hatch. Waiting on 2 more.
People are posting lack of hope for the remaining 2 eggs.

Good snips sky! :)

ONE LONE CHICK was able to hatch - out of a clutch of 5. One inviable, 3 died unable to hatch.

Thanks Shepherd..

I think we were watching the same feed...

So, the mystery continues...the good news is that the chick appears energetic and eating well...

another chick unable to complete the hatching process, at least yet. for the nanosecond I got to see this egg, I could tell something was inside, but saw no movement in the brief time I had.

I've never used the word inviable before, but it actually exists. (I looked it up) It's definition is less specific than Non viable (which usually refers to an embryo) Inviable can actually refer to a newborn that is unable to sustain life on its own.

Right or wrong, I think of unhatched as as non viable (for whatever the reasons). Eggs that begin the hatching process but don't complete it, I always think of as a failed hatch...but, I guess from the broad definition, it could be "inviable"...who knows...all I know is some of these chicks are not able to get out. I hope somebody (Bob or Amy) will eventually share an educated guess as to what has happened.

I guess I missed something along the way. I thought we had:

To Start...5 eggs: 1 dud, 1 hatch, 2 failed hatches, 1 egg left...did they have 3 failed hatches?

sky, thank you so much. Your snips are precious.
Your pic of Travis diving out is so real I blinked and backed up! HA!
Im glad you said Tumblina is strong, as she appears fragile and not strong to me. :egg19:
We are dealing with semantics. LOL

FACT - There were fully formed chicks inside eggs chupping trying to get out and failed and died.
People dont like the word died so they use other terms.
I heard them. I am not mistaken. I could distinguish the sounds of the eggs from surrounding sounds.
I am up before dawn and its very quiet then so I can have sound UP.
I could distinguish the screee of the hatchling from the chup chup of the eggs.
I am a singer and very good with pitch and sounds. :)

FACT
5 eggs were laid
2 were eaten

MY OPINION
The first eaten never had a chick - not fertile.
(sky - our definition of 'dud' is the same - haha)
The second eaten was a living peeping chick trying to hatch.
The 3rd Travis nibbiled on today - May 19 - perhaps a breech that couldnt get out and died.

I hold no hope for the 4th egg

Its Nature. Its not cruel.
From the SS it sounds like several nests had losses this years. This is not unusal.

Conjecture
The other birds around GSB may be eating GMO crops which is affecting the birds.
This is something I know too much about

I seek truth and fact and reality. I am a news reporter.
