Great pics, Terka, Shepherd and Delawaeirie...yep..I think its important to document growth..

As far as "solo" goes...really cute name, but its used so often when there's just one chick!! I can't remember, how DO they name the chicks here?

YES sky that is true. I have often seen the names Solo and Spirit for other fledglings.
Mr GSB the Howe family name the chicks. They dont accept our suggestions.
I REALLY hope they dont name the poor chick Macintosh.

I am calling the GSB chick Trami Tumbles
Tra-Mi for Travis and Michelle's onlychild. Its perfect
.
- the tumbles will be dropped soon - I hope. She is sitting up better this morning! :)
There are not other fledglings named TraMi for sure! :) ` :egg11:

May 22 Thursday GSB
5 am Michelle exits, I hear a ruckus on the roof - dunno what that was - it was SHORT lol - snip
I think it was Travis with prey
5.07 M returns to feed Trami Tumbles. She makes enough NOISE for 5 babies!

Mr Ruckus on roof - see?

I just saw this from the RRP facebook page. They've got got some of it wrong. the egg that Michelle took out yesterday was not empty, it was a failed hatch!. Bob also made a comment on the harsh weather we had.

"Michelle laid five eggs beginning on April 4th. Falcons, especially smaller males, often struggle to incubate that many. One egg broke up on May 9th, Michelle ate a 'hatching' egg on May 18 (we think the embryo suffered cold-related developmental injuries and died during hatch), and Michelle removed an empty egg from the nest this morning, May 21. The egg must have frozen and cracked, emptying its contents but leaving the shell relatively intact."

" Bob commented that he'd seen more egg-eating this year than ever before. The extreme temperatures may have contributed to more freezing and breakage than usual, especially since falcons don't start full incubation until after the third egg is laid in a four-egg clutch, or the fourth or fifth egg is laid in a clutch with more than four eggs. Cracked, dead eggs won't hatch, and they provide falcons with an important source of protein, calcium, and calories."

Del, whats that link? I searched and couldnt find it
Thank you so much for posting. It was on SS but no link.
I so dislike dishonesty - and I am being mild! ` :gaaaaah:
There are those who'd rather lie than say I dont know. NOT naming any names.
Empty eggs dont cheep! I know full well I heard a chorus of chupping eggs.

Its so quiet before dawn, so there is no outside noises and I know what I heard.
I would not be surprised if Travis couldnt keep 5 eggs warm - in which case I never would have heard chupping eggs.

May 21 chick was trying to hatch and I could hear it cheeping with the hatchling.
It died and I saw Michele take it out. :(
As a singer and piano player I know harmony from solo.

CAUSE
I may not be *qualified* to say what happened, but I suspect it was the shells being particularly thick.
Birds do not help chicks hatch - thats Nature. The struggle helps it survive.
sky mentioned a virus inside shell - that could be.
Its not impossible the spraying last year for the bugs did contribute to failed hatches.
I figure the first egg she ate was infertile.

I saw the falcon eat one of her eggs at - I think the king plant, or one of the xcel cams.
She is an old bird and laid a white egg and ate it - possibly this occurred twice.
She was replaced by another young bird.
2 of Wilmintons 6 eggs hatched but the chicks died.
Lots of nesting troubles this year

My comments are NOT professional - they are simply my own.

Copied from RRP forum May 22, 2014

What's going on at Great Spirit Bluff? We've been getting a lot of questions about it since Saturday morning, when Michelle was spotted lifting and nibbling at one egg in the morning and eating another in the afternoon. Why was Michelle eating her eggs? Why aren't more eggs hatching?

Michelle laid five eggs beginning on April 4th. The egg must have frozen and cracked, emptying its contents but leaving the shell relatively intact.

At present, we have one eyass and one unhatched egg in the box. We don't know whether or not the remaining egg will hatch. It hasn't burst yet, but Michelle has also left it un-incubated for relatively long periods of time. Michelle and Travis won't curtail hunting or feeding activities, so the young falcon (or falcons, if the second egg hatches) will reap the benefit of abundant food.

Bob commented that he'd seen more egg-eating this year than ever before. The extreme temperatures may have contributed to more freezing and breakage than usual, especially since falcons don't start full incubation until after the third egg is laid in a four-egg clutch, or the fourth or fifth egg is laid in a clutch with more than four eggs. Cracked, dead eggs won't hatch, and they provide falcons with an important source of protein, calcium, and calories.

A few highlights:

5/21/14 - Michelle removes egg:

5/18/14 - First feeding at GSB:
http://goo.gl/xA93Vi

5/18/14 - Eating an egg (failed hatch):
http://goo.gl/G5EfyG

5/18/14 - Lifting an empty egg. She appears to be nibbling at it, but we think she might have been eating dried prey remains from an empty egg, since it's unlikely she could have lifted it by a strand of entrail had it been full.

* I asked Del if he'd be insulted if I posted the entire thing - its from RRP forum.
He said that is just fine

Thanks Shepherd (and Del...)

still no theories about failed hatches, though...I'd have to go back and look, but overall, I don't think we've had an increase of "egg eating"/"egg breaking this year.. Maybe they have in that region....

SPOTS
There were spots on BOTH eggs May 20th in morning.
People 'over there' are talking about the lone egg left having a spot as if it may hatch.
It wont.
