Amy really didnt say much. Would she have put anything on them?

No...too hard and too dangerous to trap the adults. Adults can usually handle these things. They preen and bathe, etc Babies can't..so, what ever parasite they have just does whatever it wants to with the chick..in this case, suck blood. As chicks age and start their attempts at preening, sometimes this can allow them to handle these things better...but, as a baby, the only thing you can do is lay there and be chewed on..

Here's Amy's report on last year's Blackdog nest...its a gruesome read..It was the shear will of that 3rd chick that enabled it to survive. The only discrepancy I have with this report is that we had been alerting people for days that something was wrong..while all 3 chicks were still alive..I'm thinking the experience at Blackdog paved the way for swifter intervention at this nest..I just pray we have some chicks to survive...at least with the parasites gone, they aren't feeling miserable right now.

sky, thank you so much for all your answers and reports.
Thanks for bugging RRP. I am glad they pay attention to Nora.
I'd think after blackdog last year they'da listened to YOU immediately.
That RW cam is just too small for me to pay attention to usually.
I snipt the pic, loaded it to photobucket, blew it up in size, then transferred to tinypic.
That is far too time consuming with DSL (glorified dialup) and an old computer!
But this is a permanent record of this nest.
With pics I can - SEE!

Those posting on RRP were glad for the info.
I love Nora - what a sweetheart.

I have the cam pre-dawn - maybe - no light / pic so - maybe I dont
*eyeroll*

PS - Hi kitten o/

She is a sweet mama, bless her heart. She knows humans helped her babies.
She is pebbling - building a playpen to protect kids.
8.45 am One kid is way out right by the edge - in danger of going over.
- I did not see how he got there

Mom had her eye on him all the while - as he crept too close she got up n grabbed him.
LOL! I am glad I caught that!

I no fwaid Ma, I a falcon!

Thanks for the earlier pics...I did get to see mom pull the baby back..

Here's the pre-feed and the feed. Vids are longer than I like them to be..3 heads up for a lot of the time. Chick #4 is still struggling...mom blocked so, I don't know if she fed it...if she did, then it just may provide enough nutrition to give it a chance to recover.

Mom on the kids, dad arrives..mom leaves and you have a good look at all 4

Probably 3/4ths through the feed...#3 has fallen (one of the really infested kids)..it may be down, but not out. You can just barely see #4 behind the others..mom blocks and I stop the recording..fingers crossed that #4 got a few bites.

After the feed and a huge scare...lots of cam issues, so I didn't get to see all of how it got out there. (I actually left the room, with recorder on, because I really was afraid it was gonna go over) I also wonder if its the same baby that was out there earlier...and now I have to question why. Drawn to the sun because of the parasite issue? Something neurological? No common sense? None of the above? LOL..IT does have a good crop, though!!

Pics are always good...some people don't have time or desire to watch vids..I usually don't do vids for this nest, but felt it important to see the movement (though cam jerky) of the 4 chicks.

Thanks to all who tried to help the chicks at Red Wing. Why is that, that somebody has to tell them something is wrong? Watching Black Dog last year made me very hesitant to watch any Excel cams this year. Looks like my thinking was right.
:gaaaaah:

Anyway came her to post Poughkeepsie

Its comforting to me to see some here are as disgusted as I am with RRP.
Dont put a nestbox in a place you will hesitate to rescue! (endrant)

Went to FB page & found this from 13 hours ago:

Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge Mary Anne, I noticed the camera was down and thought perhaps it was due to changing out computers as Stewards recently purchased a new computer to better carry the load of the cams. Pam has been on vacation (thus not in the office to give updates). Will get updated as soon as possible. Bonnie

I wonder why the time stamp is still going and its right on time (WEIRD)
