youngster will be 20 days old at banding. That is normal time for banding. We band between 18 and 21 days.

so this is not early for banding and this is probably when they can get someone to band.

June 2 Monday
This noisy, scrawny onlychick is finally starting to get cute.
ALL the falcon chicks I watch together arent as noisy as this kid.

This is the NOISIEST falcon chik I have ever seen!
It even squalls as its being fed!
It was so scrawny - and SUDDENLY - its turned into Budda!
I'll try get a snip today. A few snips and videos on RRP.




BANDING 2014 still set for Saturday June 7
Last year they didnt show live video, just photos later.
2013 banding was June 10 - 4 chicks, all survived their fludge.
You wanna go down and get the chick for banding? LOL!

So desperate to get away from hoardes of biting gnats (bugs) they went out to perch before they were really ready - or before WE were ready. *grin*
I believe Mama Michele WANTED them out and downstairs - away from bugs.

June 5 Thursday
I am not sure that chick is OK. It keeps biting Mom's foot. Mom seems concerned about it.
Something is NOT right in that box this year. Just the feeling I have had.
Little pork chop watches for Mom.






8.30 am Real ruckus at the box! Parents scolding, bluejays scolding, I heard the SCREEEEEE of a hawk. Buddachick flattened against back corner wall - shockingly - QUIET.
One parent on perch - I can see its shadow. I hope GSB posts this video - quite the bird racket out there.

BANDING 2014 WAS set for TODAY, Saturday June 7 at 2 pm central time
but - judging by all the RAIN I see on that radar,
I expect it will be too dangerous.
I see no official word however.

June 7 Band today at 2 pm central? or rain out?
I'd love to eggzamine that egg - I am convinced its a chick that couldnt get out. :(

NOON - They went down the cliff - in wind n rain - and got the chick to band it.
ugh! You couldnt pay me enuf to do that!
Looked like chick was going to exit nestbox after he was put back
Parent landed on nestbox within 5 minutes.

They banded early due to rain







You can see the door popped OPEN when box with chick landed on roof of nestbox

Later on Mom was on nestbox perch and Dad was on ledge below
All is well. I guess the nestbox gravel was cleaned out and replaced with new.

I don't understand why GSBD did not retrieve or toss the egg, unless he intended to and forgot it. That egg has to be attracting bugs. GSB did say he spread vanilla extract around the box to ward off bugs, I never heard that vanilla extract was a bug repellent. Here are some more pics, I'm not as fast as Shep lol Great snips Shep!

Interesting! So one would have to apply for a permit to remove it? Even though it's known to be a failure? hmmm I wonder if they would like to confirm or know why it and two others failed?

Del - I dont think RRP or John Howe wants to tell people it was a chick who couldnt get out - so they left it there -
now they can keep saying inviable
and there are flies (or wasps) all over it

it is more complicated than that. I do not think they would do that.

You just cannot go and retrieve and egg. We have seen this before. and it costs money to have these analyzed also.

bev - too much insanity in all that. I've seen a few times what a nuisance it is dealing with the state/Fed.
Its way over the top nuts.
The handlers cant this or that - or have to jump thru hoops.
Govt is outta control.

Thank you Bev., I seem learn a little bit every day here! Though, I think if I was a Raptor Biologist (I'm far from it) I would be clamoring for that egg. But maybe after a couple years of studying them, not so much.
