Thank you Bev., :girlyes: I seem learn a little bit every day here! Though, I think if I was a Raptor Biologist (I'm far from it) I would be clamoring for that egg. But maybe after a couple years of studying them, not so much.

First, thanks for all the great coverage everyone...I've been really tied up at Columbus, with fledges, returns, MIA's you name it..

Like bev stated earlier, ya have to have a permit to remove an egg..you actually have to have a permit in this country (can't speak for Canada or Europe) to enter a nest, to touch eyases, to band eyases...LOL Donna (biologist in Columbus) is permitted to enter a nest and handle eyases..but not permitted to band (tho' she can band just about every other creature with feathers)

Columbus is also NOT permitted to remove eggs, though I know Donna REALLY wants to every year. She's as curious as the rest of us as to why an egg didn't hatch. I'm not sure they have funding for testing though.

Its a shame they didn't remove this egg. I'm sure they got a good look at it though. "it is, what it is"...and not much we can do about it at this point...

sky - I didnt doubt bev - I just think the gov both fed and state is excessively irrational.
I've seen other cams where laws are irrational - which gets bad for the birds.

Ya know, I really haven't researched the history of the laws, but I'm sure they originated in some form or fashion because of the DDT situation...and then the passage of the Endangered Species Act....all placed into action to protect the precious chicks and eggs during recovery. I know there are still some places in Europe where chick and egg theft is still a major issue. There are several nests where volunteers monitor 24/7 so nests are not disturbed. I'm not sure how much of an issue that still is for this country.

Right or wrong, I don't see the laws changing any time soon. While the recovery efforts have really paid off, there are some states that still have the falcon listed as Endangered. (even though federally, they have been delisted)

A greater favor would be done to examine the egg - on the possibility analysis could help falcons.

I saw a Europe bird nest - forgot what bird lol - they believe people came in the night and stole the chicks.
Cam had no IR
They were there one day - gone in the morning.

This poor little one keeps scratching and you can see the bugs flying around in the box. Gawd I hope there is not a repeat of last year when all the chicks fledged too early.

June 14 Saturday
Budda appears to grown a week in 4 hours! He's got a tail and black wingtips and some brown chest feathers. It seems he is getting more brown feathers on his chest with each hour that passes!

Budda is getting a few brown chest feathers! noon June 14
Can Budda fly? rrp has a pic side by side of the budda and this chick. LOL

:egg11: :egg11:

My speculations FWTW
If chicks are dying in the shell, unable to get out, is it something in the falcons prey making the shells too hard - or the chicks too weak?
Something is interferring with nature.
GMO crops interfere with nature. Make crops resistent to bugs. *thinking*
I dont think I am out in left field or over the cliff on this.

The budda still screams a lot. I usually keep sound on mute at GSB.
His brown chest feathers coming in fast, so I guess I need daily pics.

I had never heard of Vanilla extract used as an insect repellent either and I was a boy scout back in the day. I did hear of it being used as cologne by some yocals! lol

I have used Avon's Skin so Soft as a mosquito repellant and that worked!

Poor Mac seems like he is suffering today, it's hot and the gnats are driving him back and forth in the nestbox.

They need to clean out all the old pea gravel and replace it with new stuff. I realize that alone is a task but my goodness I feel so sorry for him. He's constantly scratching and twitching his head....darn bugs. Poor little guy! :gaaaaah:
