June 16 6.40 pm The chick almost fell. He's been screaming and scratching,
he tried to climb out of the box - and very nearly fell

Carolyn they DID clean out all the old cached pea gravel when they banded him.

There is a storm coming.

6.45 pm HE FELL

In 2013 the 4 GSB chicks dropped on June 17th - 1 day later-
and ALL SURVIVED. He is fine! Parents will care for him.

You got good video Carolyn - wish you had kept shooting - but how could you know.
June 17 they all jumped last year - now today is June 16
He is actually far better off down there - just out of our view.
I will listen for him in the quiet of dawn tomorrow
Someone on RRP may have a youtube video. It takes about an hour to - whatever.

I witnessed last years fludge LIVE - and now this years fludge LIVE again.
Just in the right place at the right time.
A fludge is an accidental fledge.

Sorry, I didn't know that. :sum5: I sure hope the parents or the people that monitor the nest can find him and he's okay.

VIDEO OF FALL
Mom was right on his tail when he fell.
Last year she encouraged her young to jump.
Better off downstairs without bugs.
http://youtu.be/UVotbKua4V0

7.50 pm Travis - Dad - lands on perch - looks in box,
looks on roof, looks all over. Where's my boy!?

Here's the video of the chick falling out of the box. Mom was right there and looks like she followed him.

This is from their FB page

Raptor Resource Project

Eyass falcon MacIntosh fell from the nest box at Great Spirit Bluff. He appears to have been bothered by blackflies or gnats prior to attempting to jump to the outer perch. Unfortunately, he slipped through the gap and fell. Mom or Dad followed immediately, so if MacIntosh survived the fall, they will care for him until he fledges. He was just one day younger than the youngest falcon that fell last year and he is a smaller and lighter male, so he may survive the fall.

We checked the young falcon for hippoboscids and treated the box when we banded him on June 7th. At the time, he was healthy and parasite free. We are trying to determine whether Michelle and Travis are caring for MacIntosh via the camera and microphone, and reviewing footage to determine a course of action.

The last three years in the upper Midwest have seen a monsoon-like rain pattern, with very wet and very dry periods. Black flies lay eggs in running water, so the very wet spring has resulted in an explosive hatch. Black flies haven't previously been a problem at any of our boxes, but we may have to consider them when re-designing this one.

This is absolutely horrible...and frankly, insane!! :furious: :furious: :furious:

I don't know what could have been done, but it was obvious that he was being really bothered by these bugs for the past several days.

This is such a difficult nest to get to..

gosh, I hope he survived...poor thing!!

Thanks for posting the news, Carolyn and Shepherd

he was 29 days old . I think they were a bit older last year but he is male and only 7 to 8 days from possible fledge. awfully white though

will go back and check age last year

i f he is in tree, may be better off than box if such a storm passes through

so I went back and checked and youngest was a day older and oldest 2 days older than this one. so good chance of survival.

I will pray

we did not give up last year. you may not hear sounds for a few days. keep hope in your heart

Carolyn, thanks for posting excerpt from RRP

June 17, 2014 Tuesday
4 am I hear the gentle patter of rain and passing cars
Zoom cam is on, one of the parents is inside the box - most likely Travis, Dad.
He was on the perch - then went inside the box last nite, out of the rain.
I would expect Mom Michele is with Mac. They had quite a downpour of rain.
4.30 am Falcon moves out to box perch, shakes, scratches, rain has ceased, traffic increases.
4.38 am Songbirds begin to sing. Wee hints of dawn splash the cliff ledge below where Travis likes to sit. Parent flew to perch extension, preens.

4.50 am Both parents screaming, kakking, flying about
4.53 Travis landed on perch still screaming, looking down.
WOW! They sure echo, reverberate off the cliffs!

Yesterday -
June 16, 2014 at 6:45 pm Mac slips down thru the gap between box and perch

Image

LAST YEAR - June 17, 2013 two of them slipped thru the gap just like Mac this year.
I took these pics last year.

:think Simple Solution -
put a board under the gap between box and perch

The GSB SS lit up with frantic posts, many were - :nervous:
a couple good posts
.
- I hope this box is moved to a safer place.
- Please, someone reconfigure that nest.

I would like to see that box thoroly cleansed, and moved to the ledge below.
There the chicks would have a natural playground.
Where box is the fledglings have no place to play.
Their thinking was - this location is safer from predators, but these parents can handle those.
I have seen a great horned owl in the box here, so its not as if no predator can get there.
I also have seen a mouse/rat on roof. I think someone else saw an eagle.

Violent tornadoes, severe winds June 16

MAC is ALIVE as I was certain he would be.
I am not so sure Mom falcon didnt encourage him to get out.
The fall didn't affect his voice. It is still strong and persistent!
I hear him SCREAMING amid his parents kakking.
