It is with tears as I type, but Schatzi's body has been recovered. I will post more later. I'm so sorry everyone.
But we always must keep in mind that the mortality rate is high for these fledglings.

Oh gigi..I am so, so sorry....Every loss of a fledgling is so sad and tragic, but extra heartbreaking when its an only child.

Thank you all. Our solace is that we were able to recover her body and know for certain what had happened.

I believe I was the last person who knowingly saw her, Tuesday night as she pranced back and forth on the Sheraton Hotel. A storm came through later that evening I hoped she had found a good niche in which to seek shelter. I kept thinking that SusanH and her camera should have been with me. Schatzi was stretching her wings as if to pose.

Yesterday no one saw or heard her. I was downtown all afternoon and we saw Kathy many times in different locations, including sitting on the perch. It was if she were also looking for her girl. Of course, I thought I was reading more into her behavior than what was reality,,,

Today we were on the lookout again this morning and atop the parking garage next to Market Tower when we were approached by a supervisor from the garage. I thought he was asking us to leave, and perhaps he was going to, but when we told him that we were looking for a baby falcon, he told us that one of his maintenance workers had found a dead bird. Not realizing this was Schatzi they disposed of her body. Thankfully we were able to retrieve it and confirm our fears.

I am not sure what will happen to her body - if it is in good enough condition to preserve or if she will be given the proper disposal of protected birds. I will share info when I receive it.

Oh gigi...that is just so sad..the storm? Gosh..

So thankful you ran into that person or you guys would have never known. Sounds like people in the area need to be educated as to what they should do if they find a banded bird..I just hate to think they threw her into a dumpster (or whatever)....But, I guess they just didn't know any better.. :egg15:

I wonder..did KathyQ and/or Will see you guys with her? (I know this will sound strange) but its a shame she couldn't be placed somewhere for them to find so that they could have closure...Of course, I'm thinking like a human..their instincts have probably already told them that their child is gone.

I am sure both the supervisor and the maintenance worker did not know. Heck, 10 years ago I would not have known. We can only educate as we encounter those who need it.

No we did not display Schatzi after we recovered her body. Actually she was found in an open area right next to Market Tower so it is possible that the parents did visit her body before she was discovered.

Below is a photo showing Market Tower and the surrounding area. I annotated the parking garage where she was found. Her body was right next to the north side of the building. I also added 3 circles. The red circle is where I last saw her atop the Sheraton on Tuesday evening. The light blue circle is the elevator shaft of the Sheraton where Kathy Q was keeping watch that night and the final light green circle is the Old National Bank Building where Kathy Q was when we retrieved Schatzi's body. Hope this gives you all perspective.
