Here is a close up of Deri from the ringing yesterday. She is five weeks old today and has some of the darkest head feathers we have seen for a young osprey.

3R = Gwynant = Male = 1,520g

5R = Deri = Female = 1,600g

Look out for a blog by the end of the week with more information from the ringing day yesterday, including a four minute video shot in Ultra High Definition 4K resolution - a world first for ospreys?!
All four birds doing well this morning
Here's a photo of Gwynant from the ringing yesterday. He is absolutely beautiful.

We've had THREE intruding ospreys this afternoon, all at the same time. No wonder Gwynant and Deri were keeping low!
Look out for a video tomorrow morning that tries to convey how difficult it is to try and see and work out what is happening when we get an intruder event.

Dyfi Osprey Project: Blue 24 was definitely one of them, an other being the male that has been around for a couple of weeks. No idea who or what gender the third osprey was.

Bore da

With the omnipresent Blue 24 this year, we get osprey intrusions every day. The trick is trying to work out what's going on.

It is usually Glesni, sometimes Monty, that first alerts us that there is another osprey in the area - listen to Glesni's calls here. These mean just one thing - "Osprey too close"

Between 10am and 6pm we have a camera person in the office who can see nothing outside. Alwyn and/or volunteers are usually in the Observatory trying to figure out where the intruding osprey(s) is and communicating to the camera person in the office via walkie-talkie.

It is not easy!

Intruders usually (and unfortunately for us) don't tend to land, so they are airborne and flying at speed, several hundreds of metres away, sometimes miles away.

We look for any missing (moulting) tail or flight feathers. Blue 24 has a missing tail feather on the right hand side for example. We also look at the behaviour which might give the gender of the bird away. We can't see rings unless the bird is extremely close and then we need someone with a camera and telephoto lens!

Here is a video then of three separate intruding ospreys yesterday - we hope it gives you a flavour of what gets our hearts racing at DOP on a regular basis!

(we think the intruders were Blue 24, her new male friend and an unidentified osprey)

Gwynant has just progressed to the Helicopter stage of his flight development.

The white knuckle period is nigh.

Gwynant has fledged at 10:33

He's on top of the camera pole (right) at the moment with Mum & Dad wondering what all the fuss is about.
