2014 SOUTH BEND INDIANA ~ Scarlett & Zeus

Ground report: about 4:30 pm today adult on top of WNIT Tower, and a juvie perched on top of one of the round things about 2/3 of the way up the tower. (S) He looked fine, but I'm guessing the little one just didn't have the altitude to make it to the top. After a couple of minutes, the juvenile took off and flew past me :roll:

south about a block and then out of sight, then returned and flew right over my head ! :eek:

At that point (s)he was only about 2-3 stories high. Very exciting for me ! The juvie continued to fly heading northwest out of my sight, but not out of the parent's. The parent began scanning and turned around on the perch, then after a minute flew off to the south, which I'm guessing is where Junior flapped off to.

On Tuesday, I was on my way to the bank when I had a "Carol Riewe sighting". I also got to watch an adult and juvie flying around. I will post about that if I get time. Thanks for the pics guys, I haven't seen both juvies for a while now, and the pics help me to know what the juveniles look like right now, so I can train my binocs on 'em.

Still lounging. It is pretty warm and humid ~ 86º. Hopefully they are cooling off.

THERE IS A JUVIE ON THE PORCH RIGHT NOW, I THINK. THEY ARE SO CLOSE TO THE CAM I CAN NOT DISTINQUISH FEATHER PATTERN, BUT THERE SEEMS TO BE A BIG PIECE OF WHITE FLUFF MOVING IN CONJUNCTION WITH THEM! :flirty:

There is a falcon on the perch, preening...I haven't seen enough of it yet to know if an adult or juvie...

My cam froze and I didn't know it...so, missed the transition between perch and top of box. This certainly could have been one of the kids..

Sad news. I just received an email from Brent that Scarlett has died.

"Sad news, but I thought your community would appreciate the information.

Message from Carole, our local raptor rehabilitator…

Scarlett was injured Friday night down at the Cove. She hit the large tire on a piece of
maintenance equipment - obviously diving in after food. Animal Control brought her out to
me and I started treating her for head injury. She was a little better on Saturday and this
morning (Sunday) but when I got home from downtown in the afternoon she had expired.
Let's hope that Zeus can feed the two chicks -- the male of the pair who is flying pretty
well and the female who needs work."

OMG....this is horrible...just horrible...I cannot believe this...

I'm starting to think this nest is cursed!!! oh, poor Scarlett...just breaks my heart... :sorrow:

My only comfort is knowing that she was found and that Carole tried to help her...

this is so devastating. poor scarlett. poor Zeus and kids.
just pray another female is not around.
I am so glad she was found and they tried to help her.
such a bad , bad year. :tissue:

i f the kids are flying, the male will be able to handle them . I thought there were people there that watched from ground. I hope they will be viligent now, but I know how hard it is to get people to watch.
