I think it is all about the money ljames. The pigeon fanciers breed them to sell chicks and if their moneymaker becomes prey, they are out the cash. Just a guess. Pigeon racing seems to be more of a "sport" in Europe than here in North America.

Falconers here in the States often start out with a small raptor like a kestrel and sometimes they become prey to the larger raptors. Happened to a friend of mine.

All that being said, I think they caved. Turning off a cam is not going to help at all. The falcons will still be there and the pigeons will still be snatched. That is the way it is.

Ok, I get it, so they don't really care about the pigeons like we care about the falcons, it's all about the money to them, and turning off the cams accomplishes nothing. That makes sense, right?
:gaaaaah:

Thanks gigi.

I'm confused...what's going on? they're turning off Bocholt because of the pigeon breeders? How does that stop the falcons from eating the pigeons..

Racing pigeons are a serious sport in Europe...and breeders are suspected of being the primary killers of birds of prey. That one of the reasons that the organization that oversees the Norwich and Bath nests (and maybe others) always have a nest "sitter"...not sure what they actually call them, but they are volunteers that physically monitor the nest area 24/7.

That would be my guess ljames. In the end, it always seems to come down to the almighty dollar. I agree SGB, closing off the nest boxes and shutting down cams does absolutely nothing to help or hinder the situation. :furious:

I think its more than money...remember several years ago we had a racing pigeon breeder join the forum. I was actually excited about that..but, she got "scared" off by comments from a few members...unfortunate...but, I digress..

Most of them love their pigeons...but, she did say that it was a fairly expensive sport and when she lost one, it was both an emotional and financial blow...I can't remember where she was from...maybe the UK?
