What is this???

Camera Update 5/25/15:
The peregrine falcon chick at the Cathedral of Learning is not doing well. We have removed the camera while we assess this situation. If you choose to view images from the nest you may still do so by clicking on the "Alternate Nest View" photo below. For the time being, you may access information via Kate St. John's Bird Blog linked below. We will provide more information tomorrow and determine whether to continue to stream the cam. Thank you.

Try this link instead http://www.wildearth.tv/cam/cathedral-falcons

The chick was flipped over on its back for close to 24 hours, until Dorothy flipped him right side up a couple of hours ago. Meanwhile they removed the link to the camera from the Aviary page because people were getting upset about the situation.

thank you for letting me knowSGb

I just could not handle this anymore. Had to leave house to get my mind off if it. little kids soccer will do it every time.

my prayers will remain here, and hopefully they get their act together and do something. People are upset because they have the means , just not the ambition to do it. ambition is not righ t word but I am so stressed these last few days, that my mind is :egg13: :egg13: :egg13:

I love this chick and Dorothy even more. I wish I had kept all my videos because this little one tried to flap a bit yesterday. :5val:

The link to WildEarth's capture of Dorothy flipping the chick was posted on FB, so here it is:

It shows the feed first & the flip is about halfway through.

I was hoping you would show up & hear the good news, Bev! I knew you were thinking/worrying about it even though you weren't here!

Dorothy & babe are sleeping very peacefully now (much different from last night). What a great mom!

Thank you catwoman!

On another note from the Pittsburg Falconuts FB page:
This was posted

Please DO NOT post cam links to PixController or WildEarth. We only support the National Aviary's cams (because some of us donated to pay for the Pitt and Gulf Tower cams). All other links will be removed. Thanks.

she most certainly is. I also know we will have to wait for baby steps. it was scrunched pretty good into ground when on back and she was ling on its legs. hopefully the rest will make it stronger. ( there again, Dorothy was only doing what she thought best.) if there is injury to legs, it could have been prevented.

but I ma going to be optimistic.

Just watched video. She is absolutely incredible! What a MOM!

Honestly, I'm can't say with certainty that nothing is wrong, BUT... baby walked back to bowl. He's eating. He has feather development and interacts with parents. To me, Dorothy spends a lot of time brooding this chick. So, baby is what... 15 days old today. Normally by day 10, parents are leaving kids to explore and spend time on their own. I don't think I ever see baby left alone unless it's due to Dorothy stashing food. Everytime I turn cam on, Dorothy is on top of the baby. So, I wonder if he just hasn't had time/opportunity to develop the muscles necessary to stand/move and turn? Just my opinion.

I'm still going to stay optimistic and regardless of what happens, Dorothy rocks as a Momma and obviously passed this on to her offspring (Beauty).

MW, the opinion you posted is basically the same as a number of us think. He needs to be brooded less & moving around the nest building up some muscles. I can understand why Dorothy wants to brood him still. First off, she can because there is room to get one chick under her--if she had more, there wouldn't be room at this point. Secondly, nights have been cool there so its good that she's been keeping him warm. I hope we're right & there is nothing seriously wrong with him. :5val:

He's still against the back wall as Carly described.

I just read Kate's blog about the 24-hour nail-biter, & she sounds much more positive about the baby's condition than before. After pointing out that it is not normal for him to be on his back & not able to get up, she also pointed out that he's eating well, growing & said he's clumsy. She said if this happens again before banding, we will know not to panic because Dorothy will take care of the situation when she decides its time.
