we need grid here!!!
I wrote to several addresses........

"I NOW KNOW THE REASON why the little peregrine from the Cathedral of Learning can't get up anymore..
The reason is very simple: this baby has got starting "spreadlegs".
This is due to the fact there is not enough grid in the nestbox.
When this happens the only way to heal the peregrine is to band it on both sides and then attach the bands to each other with a cord so that the bird must keep the legs together.

But maybe it's still time to heal him in a naturel way if there can be put much more grid into the nestbox while the little one is going to be banded.
I hope this will be done very quickly! Thank you very much in advance for your kind help".

Hi Anniet! I read your post on Facebook & I was already suspecting that was the problem. After reading your post, it made sense. I hope the authorities will take your suggestion!

Dorothy is trying so hard to help her little one. Right now she's standing next to him to help him remain upright.

Mom is propping the little one up while he preens. Little one looks pretty good this morning, considering...
(forgot to note - last night I saw a good PS - right on Dorothy - didn't seem to bother her a bit).

What is "grid"? Is that the pebbles in the bottom of the nest box or is it something else?

I'm not really sure, VLU, but hopefully the biologists know. Whatever it is, its to help keep the chick's feet from sliding around in the gravel so he can get his footing. If only it can be that easy!

Another breakfast. He's leaning against the back of the nest so that's good!

Well, I have to leave for work but I'll be checking in. Can't post from work but I need to know that he's OK.

Edit: Actually, I don't know that he's actually leaning against the wall--he might just be close to it. It would be great if he's balancing himself that well
!

As an addition to what I posted earlier, I was afraid if they removed him from the nest early on, they would just euthanize him. At least nature has had a little more healing time now, and from what I've seen this morning, he's balancing better. Of course, this could be wishful thinking!

Bev...there is absolutely no reason to apologize...we have all been very emotional about this situation.

My latest rant on the BCAW FB page...

ya know...if this chick were found on the ground...or, lets say it was an adult falcon, what would happen? yep, somebody would be called, it would be rescued, taken to the vet or rehab facility and assessed. When was the last time you read about a downed adult raptor or eagle/owl/hawk/ chick that fell out of the nest and just left where it fell. NEVER..Why can't this chick get that same respect!! Yep, I know I'm preaching to the choir....I can't say this on the Pitt Falconut or Pitt Peregrine FB page because it would be deleted...though, I am tempted..

I'm debating whether to post it on the Pittsburgh falconuts FB page and then keeping time to see how long before it is deleted...hahahahahahaha

That's what I have been struggling with -- they say it's not our (meaning humans in general) place to intervene, yet what is Fledge Watch all about? They're being hypocritical.

I briefly thought about joining their Facebook page, but there are too many rules to follow. One mustn't give the eyas a name, one mustn't call the eyas "he" or "she" until the sex is known for certain, one mustn't refer to Dorothy as "Dot" or "Dottie"... and on and on.

Anyway, I see that Dorothy and baby are sleeping peacefully. She is standing next to him (or her) instead of trying to brood. I think that's good, baby has room to stretch and move around.

Other rules are no smileys, can't post about anything other than Pittsburgh Falcons and their immediate family. Last night a new rule was issued..people are to stop with posting pictures so frequently and the site is not a chat site.

just a quick post.

all opinions are welcome here Munchie

I have always said, that if something needs help you help it. the nature takes its course is a hard one for me as I know if these same people found something out in nature they would help it, I do not know of too many who would walk away.

I sure hope they do not euthanize it.

keep safe my brave one

9:41am - The little one has been standing for quite a while... even took a few wobbly steps.
A few days ago, someone mentioned "spreadleg" - Check this out: Splay leg or spradle leg: can be caused by keeping a bird on a slippery surface without enough grit. http://www.beautyofbirds.com/birdnursery.html#splay

I didn't know what splayed legs was until I googled it and guess what, a chick in 2011 at a New Jersey nest was taken from the nest and treated for it!!

Here's an reference to it on CMNH:

http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?58907

I just posted it to Pitt Peregrines, give them an idea what to check!

I remember it well. We covered it extensively here....and were fortunate to have connections through Bonnie and Mike who provided great behind the scenes pics of the chick...which was named Legs!! Legs could not stand at all. He was first stabilized and treated at Tri-State, I believe...then on to a hack box in W. VA...but, did not graduate from there and ended up with a well renowned Falconer. If you go to the last few pages of this archive, you will see some beautiful pictures of Legs.

viewtopic.php?f=424&t=719&start=200

If you scroll to page 13, you'll see before/after pics of Legs still in rehab. P 18, another pic...Beautiful pics of Legs in Juvie plumage on pages 23 and 24..
