I am feeling very encouraged by this news! Thank you for posting from 2011! I have to be gone the rest of the day but will be checking in when I can. I just wish they would get the baby before Friday!

I didn't know what splayed legs was until I googled it and guess what, a chick in 2011 at a New Jersey nest was taken from the nest and treated for it!!

Here's an reference to it on CMNH:

I just posted it to Pitt Peregrines, give them an idea what to check!

I remember it well. We covered it extensively here....and were fortunate to have connections through Bonnie and Mike who provided great behind the scenes pics of the chick...which was named Legs!! Legs could not stand at all. He was first stabilized and treated at Tri-State, I believe...then on to a hack box in W. VA...but, did not graduate from there and ended up with a well renowned Falconer. If you go to the last few pages of this archive, you will see some beautiful pictures of Legs.

viewtopic.php?f=424&t=719&start=200

If you scroll to page 13, you'll see before/after pics of Legs still in rehab. P 18, another pic...Beautiful pics of Legs in Juvie plumage on pages 23 and 24..

I remember Legs too. When Bonnie came to our Watchers Weekend, I remember talking to her about him..it was quite a story. I hope they don't euthanize this little one, who's trying so hard to survive and parents who are giving him every chance to do so.

I have to admit, when I see that someone has posted, I hesitate to click on this topic anymore. :sum8: I still can't seem to bring myself to open cam yet.
I remember very well the little sweetie in NJ getting help so fast. Its a shame that PA isn't so active. But then I think now that the PF has made such a great comeback, would other states think this way now? Back in 2011 none of the states were talking about taking them off the list like they are now. Just a thought.
I just woke up so if this sounds like rambling sorry.

My hope after seeing those pictures of legs is that they take heed here and look at all the information.
Gord has 2 educator birds, and when he has more falcons that are not releasable, he has other areas that want an educator bird.

I truly hope this one is given every chance at survival. And maybe fix up that box.

it will get stronger every day. I know this in my heart.

here is a reply I just got. I have got a lot of run around.

Good morning,

This live stream is managed by the National Aviary, not the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Live streams can provide glimpses into the rearing of young birds. Sometimes that may include situations that are difficult to watch. Pennsylvania Game Commission staff members will not intervene with the natural process.

Respectfully,
bh@pgc

LOL...they must have sent out a group response...got mine too!! Sounded like a political press release to me..I guess the last sentence said it all. I did respond and without naming names or nests, I reminded them that PA Game Commission HAS intervened in the past. Remember Harrisburg? that's PA Game Commission. Granted, I think we (and Reenie in particular) had to really apply the pressure.

I just have to note here. When they were saying she was having seizures when on back as feet and legs were sporadic
That , is just plain nuts. she was just trying to right herself. Anyone could see that. have you ever watched a baby.

baby steps my little one. show them all

That's what I thought, Bev... looked just like she was kicking and trying to right herself.

(Off Topic - a little while ago, I googled(Bing?) "Pennsylvania Endangered Species Act Intervention" and various alternative wordings... anyway, I don't know what I did wrong - but a webpage came up that looked like the PGC that I've read several times previously - I think my PC almost got a virus - immediately did scan, etc. and several "danger" things did pop up. So - be careful out there.)

I'll admit that I have not seen seizures in a bird before. However, I have seen plenty of seizures, of all different types, in a child. Oh, and once in a weimaraner dog. None of the chick's movements either before it fell or after it was on it's back resembled any kind of seizure that I am familiar with. For what that's worth!

I'm hoping the little one just needs a couple extra days to strength it's leg muscles. After all, Mom spent an extra long time brooding him (or her) and he didn't get the exercise he would have received had he been born in a larger clutch.

To me those didn't look like seizures, I only saw that happen when "D" was scooching on it. Maybe I missed something somewhere tho.

As a nurse, I've seen several types of seizures in both adult and children plus our Golden Retriever suffered from grand mal seizures..what I saw did not look like any seizure to me. It looked like a nestling that lost its balance, fell on its back, flailed its legs to try and right itself. Jmo...

I'm soooo glad to see the little one is doing so well today! Either nature has started healing him or he is compensating for his problem, or a combination of both.

Kris, thanks for posting the link to Kate's blog. It sounds like she's quite impressed with this little one (as we all are). He/she isn't a sick, weakly eyas but a strong, healthy, smart and determined eyas! :egg17:

I had noticed talk about seizures in one of the Pitt groups, but I didn't realize they meant when he was kicking to right himself. :egg16:

Kitten, the reason you saw Dorothy beside him when he was kicking was because she was trying to help him turn over. When he would get tired & stop kicking, she would stop pushing & let him rest.

I'm glad you all mentioned Legs. I didn't follow that nest very closely, but I do remember Legs & how well he did & the happily ever after story. If he couldn't stand at all, & this one can stand and just has balance issues, it gives me a lot of hope that he will be OK!

OK, now I'm caught up with the day's posts! :teehee:

These pictures were from the feed a few minutes ago:
