there have been so many examples of falcons that do well with a handicap.

all I wanted was for them to look at her , not euthanize her. look at the humanity in ft. Wayne.
since Dorothy has not been squishing her down , she, in my opinion , is getting stronger.

sigh. Sorry I got carried away. :sum8: I should have said "there MIGHT be no reason to take the baby from the nest permanently". Of course we do not know what the medical situation is yet. But I am rooting for this baby! :girlyes:

Bev, I agree that lately the baby has shown more stability and confidence whilst preening and standing. I've even seen a flap or two! :ohyes:

SGB, I loved watching the juvie in Rome helping with her little brothers & sisters! That situation was like taking one of our fantasies & making it come true!

From what I've read on the Aviary page & what Kate has posted, they try to return chicks to their parents if at all possible, but if little one needs some sort of brace to correct a problem, I think they will have to put it in rehab. I don't think they would return him to the box & then have to go back there to check on him. Its probably a matter of what, if anything, is needed to help him.

Dorothy & little one looking healthy & happy this morning:

(approx. 6:15am - Chick was sitting alone - looked quite steady and alert. A little while later (time?), Mom brought breakfast and both seemed to eat well - the chick very vocal!)

Sort of off-topic, but not really since I used it as an example. The third juvie I know of who has stayed home is the little boy at Hemweg & I was curious as to whether he's still there even though there are new chicks for this year. He is, there is a capture of him in the nest with the babies & another with him sitting outside the nestbox guarding the chicks while parents are gone!

CW - So is the juvie seen "hanging around," the 'little boy' you're referring to? Just checked it out... interesting (actually, Amazing!) Thanks!

I just received a nice and very detailed email from the PA Game Commission, including all the information and possibilities to help this little dear chick:

Le 28/05/2015 13:20, GM, Comments a écrit :

You’re welcome. We recently received additional information from our peregrine falcon coordinator. Please see below:

We have been following the situation at the Peregrine Falcon nest at the University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of Learning very closely for several months, starting even before the eggs were laid. The lone chick (out of 4 eggs laid) is developmentally abnormal, due to the adult female’s extreme age. The female is 16 years old. Falcons who live to this age in the wild (which is rare) have reduced fertility and a heightened incidence of developmental defects in their chicks, if they even have chicks. That is what has been happening with this female for the last 3 years.

If there were anything we could do to help the chick, we would do it. For example, if the chick had an injury or a treatable disease, we would help it immediately, as we always do in such circumstances. But there is nothing we can do in this case.

In the mean time, the parents are taking care of the chick far better than any humans could. The chick is growing well, and although it is obviously very clumsy, there is no evidence that it is suffering. The best thing we can do for the chick right now is to leave it with its parents.

That situation may change in the near future. The chick will be 19 days old on Friday 5/29, and soon after that it will begin walking around in the nest, and there is the possibility that it could fall out of the nest, which would not be good, considering that the nest is on the 40th floor of the building.

We (PGC) and partners will visit the nest on Friday 5/29, a date that was chosen with the chick’s best interests in mind, and at that time, the chick will get a thorough exam by veterinarians and wildlife biologists. If it is determined that the chick may become at risk of falling out of the nest, and/or that it is unlikely to survive in the wild, we will remove the chick from the nest and take it to a wildlife rehabilitator for further analysis, and then to a permanent home where it can have a happy life in safety. That is the most likely outcome on Friday. Arrangements have already been made with a wildlife rehabilitator and a home. If the panel of wildlife experts determines that the chick does have a good chance of surviving well in the wild, we will return the chick to the nest after examining it on Friday, but that seems unlikely at this point.

At the present time, the best place for the chick, for its sake, is in the nest with its parents. In the near future, the best place for it may be with human caretakers. We will determine that, and act appropriately.

Thank you for your concern and for contacting us about this.

So happy to hear that this little one will be cared for one way or the other! :sum9:
How long would Dorothy keep looking for her chick at the nestbox if/when the baby is removed?

Thank you so much for sharing your email, anniet (and I got a similar one..so, everybody check your emails)
And I agree...we were heard!! I am so thankful they have been working on this and planning for the "what-ifs"!!

Of course, we all hope this baby is found healthy enough to be returned, but I think we need to prepare ourselves for the possibility that it won't be. I (and we) need to remember our goals from the start of all of this..for this baby to get help!! If it doesn't return, I will be very sad..and even sadder for Dorothy and E2. They have both been so devoted and will be tough for both of them for a few days.

Let's hope they are able to have a very knowledgeable person on hand who can really evaluate this chick...and also hoping that the baby doubles in strength, mobility and coordination right up to the second he/she is taken for banding!!

although I would be very sad to see the chick not with Dorothy, the chicks best interests must come first.

I truly hope they are not snowing us, and that if chick cannot be returned, it will be cared for.

and that is all I am saying.

I continue to pray for it and Dorothy. great parents here
but it is looking stronger every day

The baby is looking even more stable, alert and active this morning; sitting up, short scoots to the shade, a bit of flapping, preening over his back with confidence, vocalizing to Mom. Still wobbly, but I haven't seen him go over backwards this morning. Perhaps he has enough base strength at this point to allow him to get even stronger! :loveheart:

I agree with you Bev. My biggest fear is that they would decide to euthanize it, even though it doesn't appear to be suffering.

SGB I'm sure now the evaluation by veterinarians and wildlife biologists will be done right..
Nevertheless I feel the best solution could be one of safety.
The chick's sort of extreme "flat feet" don't seem to grip at all, and this won't be better yet tomorrow.
