Woods Hole

I have had NO time for osprey this season, so I thought I'd at least check on a few nests..but all I can say is: :omg :omg :omg

What the heck is going on here????!!! I'm used to seeing sibling rivalry when they are much younger, but at this age? This is brutal!!! This was the 3rd attack during this feed, which is still going on..(excuse the software update intrusion...these things are driving me bonkers)

Evidently this is a terrible female - last year troubles too

WHOI Updates July 15, 2015
http://www.whoi.edu/website/osprey-cam/news

Osprey chick is alive and well after being pushed off the nest by the other juvenile shortly after a fish arrived. It landed in some dense overgrowth (not the ground) and was sitting quietly atop the bushes when found, alert and clear-eyed. No flapping of injured wings, etc.

It was transported to Cape Wildlife Center in Barnstable, Mass. in a sheet-covered carrier and after initial frantic movements, settled down. Intial exam was very positive and follow up even more so. Its wings are intact (radiology confirmed) and doesn't look like it suffered any trauma. It's in good hands.

Posted on Woods Hole O Cam site
(http://www.whoi.edu/ospreycam/page.do?pid=41055)
We are so sorry to have to let you all know that, despite everyone's efforts, the young osprey died this morning. The bird was severely emaciated, which was a strong contributing factor. We are running more tests. It is a hard fact of nature that ospreys often reject ill or weak young and there is often nothing that can be done for them at that point. Thank you all so much for caring.

Very, very sad to read that. They had posted on their FB page last evening that it was dehydrated and emaciated...when I read that, I knew it didn't sound good...but, I had hoped they would be able to pull it through...

bonbon..I know you followed that nest closely...So very sorry!!!

Woods Hole~

I've been making spot checks...and have seen no food!! (where is the male?)

Anyway, this last check, it appeared that mom went into defense mode...

Image

Image

after a few minutes, she took off (missed that) and the chick pancaked immediately..

Image

Mom is still gone and baby is now up, flapping like crazy!! Which I guess is a good thing since every time I checked, it appeared to be 'curled up in a ball"...fearful of mom's attacks?

Oh, Sky, it's such a mystery - I don't think Dad's been seen since Tuesday (1 fish yesterday am - everyone missed deliverer, and 1 yesterday pm - brought by Mom - that's the feeding which caused the 'incident.') - that's it; nothing today.
There are 'boots on the ground' (Jazzel; she monitors 80+ nests and is passionate about O.) - she rescued the chick, and she's probably on her way home now. Evidently, there are several O flying around the nest - maybe that explain some things - but not Mom attacking her chick - twice? today. (I saw one of today's attacks - it was more like a very hard push, nothing like we've seen before.) Poor chick has got to be dehydrated and sooo hungry.
There are biologists and other experts(Alan Poole, Dr. B, Dr. Spitzer) watching also (as they did last year); everyone is stumped.

Thanks bonbon...yes, very familiar with Jazzel's passion (she used to be a mod here..)..

anyway, parent has just returned with NO Fish!! I don't know the parents well enough to know if this is mom or dad...but, since you mention dad's absence, I'm guessing its mom but from this angle, looks too small AND Calm...LOL..so, either this is Dad or mom has eaten and is in a better mood.!!

I think it's Dad - but who's he looking at on the cam?
(Maybe Female intruder? Males don't (usually) chase after females, right - males go after males, females go after females? -But on this nest - hard to determine.)

I pride myself on my observations and reporting facts.
To report a chick as - fine - then it dies is upsetting to me
even beyoond the poor creature.

Mom could be up there or he could just be distracted by the cam if he doesn't hang around on the nest very much. I've seen plenty of osprey pics where you'll have a parent in the nest and the other perched on the cam..

Even if there were an intruder sitting on the cam, dad would be kakking like crazy and sounding the alarm. If that is dad..he is very calm..I just wish he had brought a fish..LOL

Having said all of that, I do not know this couple, so I'm just drawing from my limited osprey knowledge..oh..and yes, I doubt very seriously if a male would take on a female..

I certainly understand where you're coming from...but often, "hoping" a chick is fine translates into "a chick looks fine" when it may not be. I only had limited viewing of chick #2 and from a cam perspective, it did look fine, minus some feathers...but, reading about limited food intake over extended time, I had very serious concerns. When I compared the tweet info with the rehab centers info, I knew it was not gonna turn out well. Osprey chicks are tough to rehab and are very fragile...though rehab groups have made great strides in caring for them...which is awesome...so, I had high hopes they had gotten to it in time...

I don't know if this is true, but I read somewhere that osprey are easily stressed and that affects rehab...wonder if that is still true..

Hi Shep! Especially the weight: 980 grams (which meant nothing to me at the time) - unfortunately, yesterday afternoon was absolutely Horrible - maybe they were trying to give us a 'good night's rest.' But the initial reports were very hopeful - and s/he wasn't injured, a miracle considering the beating he took and the fall.

Here's a pic that was posted on the cam page (under Updates)

Little cutie fell in the bushes - cushioned his fall...
