I haven't see a bird that I can say for sure is the old female recently. While it's sad to think she might not be around anymore, the new female certainly is beautiful and the male definitely looks infatuated! :hearts:

I tried to go back a few days ago and look at the history. Its hard with the camera above because you usually can tell the difference with markings around the head. I will try and find a few to help. Of course, a band ID will be the sure way to tell.

I'm sorry that you are having these issues here. There seems to be an excess of females this year for some reason. I just asked one of our biologists about it today. She thought it was odd too. They say a good nest location is more important than a mate, and these females seem ready and willing to fight for a nest. In Toronto there is a male flying between two females several miles apart. YIKES!!

I remember >Froona saying it is all about real estate (location, location, location!)

Also she talked about genetics and vibes between the male and female...

FYI for Kim and Greg

Agreed -- a wealth of information and pictures. What we're seeing in Wilmington has been seen before.

If the old Wilmington female is done, she and the male still left a big legacy, launching multiple young several years in a row (5 one year) until last year, when all four young died for reasons we still don't understand.

I believe 2004 is the first year we know for sure it was the same pair. That being true they successfully raised 21 kids. Is that right Greg? Four each year other than the one year when they raised five.

If anyone would like to see pictures of the Wilmington falcons from 2004-2007, here's a link:

That's true about the abundance of females. At the Carson Bldg. in Harrisburg last year there were 4 females and 1 male hatched. The male was euthenized for leg injuries on the train tracks.

Kim is right that the Wilmington pair raised 21 young birds from 2004--2008 (4 every year except one banner year of 5). There were 4 fledglings again in 2009 that got big enough to band but died or disappeared before they could fly.

Three young fledged in 2003 and at least two in 2002 (which was before I knew where the nest was; I just saw them following an adult around town, begging). I remember that Craig Koppie told Kim and me that one of the adult birds was replaced after 2003.

I meant 4 young in 2009; they did not fledge.

Not a very good pic cause its getting dark & the pic is grainy, but someone is here. I think because of the size its the male.

Kim and Greg - Thanks so much for providing us with additional information (and pictures) from years past about the Wilmington falcons. We're really fortunate this year to have the live cam and both of you contributing to the forum.

I hope we'll have a successful nesting season in Wilmington!

Hi Catbird -- Amen to that. If, as appears to be the case, we have had a changing of the female guard, I hope for some more good web cam pictures of the new female, and eventually, pictures by Kim once the young are fledging and the adult female is out of the box and visible. Web cam angles are deceiving, but my impression is that the new lady is a very big girl, bigger than the last one, who was by no means a shrimp.

One large falcon in the nest box around 7:30 this morning. :)
Image

I'm not positive but I think this one is smaller. He flew in with prey, sat for a while and then flew out with the prey. Maybe looking for his sweetie?

Nice catch this morning, Kim!

Do you have an alternate link to get to the cam? Whenever I've tried to get there this morning, all I get is this message: "Sorry! This site is temporarily down, and will be restored as soon as possible..." :?

You can also use this link but it's smaller and they play bird music so you might want to hit the mute button if you're at work!

Doesn't the bird on the left look larger?
Image

If the bird on the left is the female, then we have a male intruder. <sigh>
