VOTE NOW! – Name-the-chick finalists

After receiving 364 submissions during the first phase of our “name-the-chick” contest, a blue ribbon committee had the tremendous challenge of selecting finalists. After gut-wrenching deliberations and fierce debate, the committee chose six finalists. With finalists selected, it is now time for “the people” to have the final word and give our Peregrine Falcon a name. Below, the finalists are listed and justification is provided explaining why each name is worthy of consideration. Below the the list of finalists is the actual poll. The finalists, in alphabetical order, are:

Bertram: In honor of Bertram Goodhue, the architect of the Nebraska Capitol.

Dinan: In honor of John J. Dinan, former Nongame Bird Program Manager at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission . John was instrumental in initiating the Peregrine Falcon projects at the Nebraska Capitol and WoodmenLife Tower. John Dinan passed away from cancer at age 51 in 2005, the first year a Peregrine Falcon fledged from the Capitol. Before John died, he selected the name of the first peregrine falcon chick that fledged, Pioneer.

Legacy: The chick carries the legacy of his parents, 19/K and Ally, who have raised 22 other offspring during their reign (2005 – present).

Nebraska: In honor of the state the Peregrine Falcon chick was hatched and raised.

Solo: The chick was the only one out of five eggs to hatch; also a reference to the Star Wars character.

Survivor: The eyas is the only survivor of five eggs, has survived with only one parent for much of his upbringing and survived some nasty weather (storms, extreme heat).

Capitol falcon should fly free again; grandson not so lucky

Capitol falcon 19/K probably won't return home in time to see his latest fledgling's first flight.

But the 15-year-old peregrine's dislocated elbow has healed, meaning he can start to stretch his wings and begin the slow progression toward freedom.

"He's doing well. His wing was unwrapped last night and it's a little bit stiff — as can be expected," Betsy Finch, founder of Fontenelle Forest's Raptor Recovery in Elmwood, said Tuesday.

His grandson's prognosis is worse.
Hunter, a fledgling from Omaha's Woodmen Tower, won't return to the wild after being found on a sidewalk and diagnosed with retinitis. The permanent vision impairment means he can't be released and will instead be used for education or display.

And the falcon’s name is…..
Joel Jorgensen June 27, 2016 Nongame Bird Blog

With more than a thousand total votes cast, the winning entry of our name-the-chick contest is “Dinan”. The name honors John J. Dinan, former Nongame Bird Program Manager at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. John was instrumental in initiating the Peregrine Falcon projects at the Nebraska Capitol and WoodmenLife Tower. To illustrate this point, we went to the NEBRASKAland archives and found a few wonderful photos of John working on the Peregrine Falcon projects back in the day. The first photo shows John helping band a young falcon at the WoodmenLife Tower in 1992. The two subsequent photos show John installing the original Peregrine Falcon nest box at the Capitol in 2003. The final photo shows John inspecting the nestbox with a camcorder.

thank you CArolyn. :7val:

Peter and I have to learn how to video better. All we get is dead air. and every once in awhile a falcon

we keep saying we are going to practice and then do not have time.

I am so happy things have turned out considering all the heartache

:nervous: Gee Carly- I haven't seen any comments about an "extra" peregrine on the Facebook page. Everyone seems to be celebrating 19/Ks release. Maybe they are aware, and just not commenting on it?
