OMG!!!!! I don't believe it! The new female falcon in Wilmington, DE, is none other than Harrisburg's Red Girl from 2008.

Kim Steininger just posted this on the Wilmington thread:

Kim Steininger wrote:
Some info from Art McMorris on our new female!

"I banded A/53 Black/Green at the Rachel Carson State Office building, Harrisburg, PA on May 22, 2008. (How's that for fortuitous coincidence - falcons nesting at the Rachel Carson building!) Her federal band is 1687-10857, and I placed red tape over it. (Her sister A/55 got blue tape.) She hatched May 1 or 2 and fledged ~June 11. Local observers rescued her at least once soon after fledging - the young at that nest often get into trouble on the sidewalk, etc. I'm glad to hear that she's doing well, but sorry to hear that she was the demise of your resident female. Do you think she was involved in the ruckus at your nest last year and the mysterious disappearance of the young?

She indeed does have fierce bloodlines. Her grandmother, the nesting female at the Girard Point bridge in Philadelphia from 1998 to 2005, was one of the most aggressive peregrines I've encountered, and her mom at the Rachel Carson building (2000 - present) is also pretty intense. It makes banding the young an adventure each year, but we like them that way - they're tremendously protective of their nests and young."

If you go to the following page and scroll down about half way, you can see the pictures that Kim took this morning of Red Girl with hew new beau, the Wilmington male.

Red tape from 2008--our Drama Queen, Ms. Red Girl! I'm so excited! I don't know that a subadult would create the havoc that Wilmington had last year since a subadult is too young to nest, but I'm certainly no expert on this!

Reenie will be thrilled!
:wow: :party2: :wave

Have had some time to let all of this sink in. I do feel badly that Red Girl caused the demise of another Peregrine. Also can tell from what I've read that Mom's mom is no longer with us. I attended some workshop in Harrisburg several years ago, and saw a picture of Mom's mom. She was a real beauty. No wonder Mom is, too.

What exciting news about Red Girl. :hearts:
She is so beautiful now. :cloudnine:

edit. I am too of course sorry that she most likely battled and killed the other falcon, but this is the way they do. But I don't believe that she had anything to do with the chicks from last year as I don't think she would have been old enough, plus hanging around for the entire year??

Remember how worried we all were about that loud Red girl, being the last to fledge, hanging on the ledge for so long, wondering if she would ever go...... I guess we all need to remember her success when we get so worried about them! We definitely saw her fiery personality from the beginning!!!

Way to go Red! :yip :wow:

You're right--I had forgotten about that! I think she is also the one (in fact I know it was her) that they dumped on the ledge after having to be rescued (she wouldn't jump out of the box as they expected) & she had the most indignant look on her face!

I remember that. It was my first year watching and I was so concerned that something was wrong with her that she didn't fledge, then they rescued her and she sat there again for a couple of days I believe. Then I was afraid that she had been traumatized so badly that she would never fly again. :laugh2

Laughing with you, not at you!

What wonderful news! I am beaming. That was my first year too and I remember her well. It's really great to hear she is well. Goes to show that we all often worry for nothing

I am so glad to have the news of 2008 Red Girl at a her own nest site. Whether she caused the problem they had there last year is something we will probably never know. I don't remember which year it was, or which youngster, but one of the "girls" was so possessive of the Harrisburg nest ledge that we wondered if she might try to displace Mom. Peregrines have an extremely aggressive nature when it comes to territory, and there are numerous stories to that affect. It is indeed good news to know one we watched hatch and fledge at Harrisburg is now doing her own "thing" and has her personal nest site. Hooray for Red Girl from 2008!

Norma, I am pretty sure you are talking about Red Girl..... loud, screaming, fat, always first to the food drop. Remember we thought maybe she ate too much and that was why she didn't fly away! I guess she got the "alpha" gene and took it to DE!!!

I wouldn't have believed it unless I saw that red tape is STILL on her leg band! After looking over some records I have here, it is ALL coming back to me now. She fledged on a Saturday around 5:00 in the afternoon. I was in a parking garage searching for a missing juvie, when a call came on my radio that DEP lets us use saying that Red just fledged. She wound up over on the new building next to the Carson Building that was still under construction at the time. She took off and wound up getting all tangled up in this netting over there, and was hanging on for dear life upside down as those of us on the street stood by and watched helplessly. Don't remember all the details, but she took off and wound up inside a different parking garage, and the guard would NOT let us in to help her. I remember going back down very early the next morning, for there were only two of us who knew where she had been the night before. She was found sitting on a rooftop kind of catty-corner from the Carson Building. Some rescuers were back in this alley keeping an eye on her, and I was out on the sidewalk on Market Street across from the Carson Building. All of a sudden a Peregrine comes tearing down the alley right towards me. I remember taking a couple steps to the left, thinking this bird was going to land right on me, and there Red was on the sidewalk two feet away from me! I remember grabbing my radio and yelling to the others that Red was on the sidewalk right beside me. She flew/hopped right across Market Street, went around the corner about half a block away, and there was rescued. One gal carried the rescue box with Red in it and carried it like it held some fragile china. Somewhere on the old forum I have an account of all of this before, and I'll have to see if I can find it.

THIS IS SUCH GREAT NEWS, I'M SPEECHLESS. AND TO SEE THAT RED TAPE STILL ON HER RIGHT LEG JUST AMAZES ME! I TOO REMEMBER WHAT JANE WROTE ABOUT, THEY HAD CALLED ME TO GO UP AND GET THEM IN THE BUILDING TO RELEASE RED GIRL WHEN THEY RESCUED HER. I DROPPED MY BAGEL, JUMPED IN THE CAR AND FLEW TO HARRISBURG :-) JANE, I HOPE YOU WILL BE GOING DOWN TO SEE HER ON A WEEKEND BECAUSE I WANNA GO TOO!!!!
