Wow! That is dark!

It certainly is easier to tell male and female ospreys apart than it is bald eagles or peregrine falcons. Too bad the juvies aren't as easy to tell apart.

I have been missing out on my bird fix since the Columbus falcons are offline, Channel 6 can't be persuaded to keep their camera aimed at the Columbus ospreys, and now Bailey has "bailed". Have you ever seen the Pioneer Log & Timber osprey nest in Montana? It's interesting - they have two chicks hatched 5 days apart (a third hatched in-between but didn't make it). The older chick is getting close to fledging. The younger chick is a lot smaller, probably due to a food shortage that happened right after they hatched, but he (or she) is such a fighter! And the older chick is so sweet, often hanging back and letting the younger one eat first.
Chatters have named the family Oscar, Olive, Ollie... and Squirt. :loveshow:

:flirty: Squirt holds his wings as if he were the age of a bobblehead rather than his true age.
Hoping that is not "angel wing!" I read in a young bird (waterfowl) they can wrap it's wings and give whatever the diet deficiencies are to correct. But the adult can not fly and dies @ a younger age.

:flirty: Ages of Ollie/Squirt are 55/50. Someone asked if Squirt remains spunky after Olive leaves for migration, will he be rescued? Mod replied: Property owner has no plan to intervene, but says Fish and Wildlife et al. are welcome to if so desired. Some others are replying nature will take its course.

:sum9:  :sum9: Now someone is saying they received an email from CROW they are willing to take Squirt, however they would prefer from their own state as it would be easier. They have to release back to where bird came from. The viewer reporting this confirms CROW has been watching this cam and are aware of Squirt. Mod has also asked questions of this viewer, so I am assuming this is legitimate! Another viewer reports CROW had a bird with a wing deformity earlier this year. Oh my goodness I hope this will happen for Squirt! Squirt is becoming famous across the world as news travels of his condition. Surely he should be a member of "Bird Cams Around the World" hint, hint!! :teehee: I love me some Squirt!! :flirty:

EDIT: Now mod is saying Montana Fish and Wildlife have already indicated they will not step in.
And from what I read of viewers posting of "said" CROW email is they believe a rehabber closer to home would be better. Oh no! It's sounding now as if nothing will be done ...

Now someone is saying Squirt is not an osprey, but a sparrow hawk. Saying they are an ornithologist that is retired with over 30 years experience. Okay I'm done, he and mod got into fuss and all his comments went kapooey!! :teehee:

Earlier this week a person in chat was trying to convince everyone that Squirt is really a red-tailed hawk. Ever since that hawk was discovered in an eagle nest up in BC, people think they are "discovering" them everywhere!

Everyone, this is Squirt and Ollie. Squirt likes to sit right at the edge of the nest so he can watch and yell at the humans working in the lumberyard below. Word has it he thinks he's their supervisor!

Yeah, I think Squirt and Ollie are going to need their own message board.

According to a bird rehabber that is known to a mod @ site, the deformity may be caused by "Disruptive Keratin Disorder."

Thanks for the great coverage of the new osprey nest!! WOW...what a size difference!! Squirt's wings remind me of "angel wing"...You see it in ducks/geese from poor or inappropriate diet (ie, bread crumbs)...From what I've read, its irreversible in adults but could be treated in youguns!!

Dad just brought in a huge fish...and mom is feeding both now..

Instead of starting a separate thread, I propose that this nest coverage move from the Hog Island thread (which is in Maine~LOL) to the Dunrovin/Hellgate (Montana) thread

Bailey fledged! :flirty:

Please, unfold for weather report and more information!

Hello, osprey friends!

News from Eric as per August 8, 7:30 pm EDT: "It seems Bailey has made the leap today and fledged. She was standing on the edge of the nest this morning, but the nest is now vacant. We can hope she is honing her fishing skills and strengthening her wings. I am keeping an eye out around campus to glimpse a flyover. - Eric"

:flirty: They are reporting on chat that after sitting in the treetop for 2 days, Bailey has been flying today. There are pics of 2 osprey attacking eagle high in the sky and a 3rd one joined them.

 From what I can glean ... all is well here! They are eating their fish and Steve is building a 3rd nest in Bailey's favorite tree!! I don't know if they will refer to this nest as a "frustration nest"
or a "princess nest" for HRH Bailey!! :teehee:

:flirty: Rachel has not been seen since yesterday and this is unusual for her. They believe she left for migration this morning. If so, hoping you have a wonderful and safe migration Rachel and congratulations on a job well done here. For me, you have earned the "Mother of the Year" this season! Can't wait for your return next spring!
