Way to go, Red Girl. :bravo Yes, she certainly deserves another woodcock for all the hard work she is doing.

If Red doesn't get back on those eggs soon, I'm going to start thinking that she's decided to have 5 eggs like her mother! Something tells me that would be very unusual for a first-time mom to do...

Kari Lyn, they are going to have a contest to name both adults, so stay tuned so that you can participate!
:clapegg:

Well I'm not so sure if there's going to be a naming contest or not. Any suggestions for names for the male?

It looks like he couldn't find a woodcock today so he brought her a dunlin instead.

What kind of bird is that? :?

I see she's off the eggs again & has been for some time. The weather is mild here right now so I imagine it is there as well, but I think she (or he) should be incubating unless they're expecting 5 eggs (which I doubt)!
:?

Wow, a Dunlin! Guess there are some mudflats not far away. I'm sure she was never served any of them in Harrisburg. Thanks for the info, DEF. Catwoman, a Dunlin is a shorebird in the sandpiper family.

It looked like a wing of the wintering bird in the Wikipedia article. There are mudflats in marshes of the Christina River (a tributary of the Delaware River) less than two miles from the nest, or maybe he could find one at a sewage treatment pond near the Delaware River, about the same distance from the nest. I've noticed remains of Dunlins under the nest at least twice in previous years.

Dunlins are common in migration and winter in various places in coastal Eurasia and North America. I don't know if there are any places along the Susquehanna to look for sandpipers in the spring and fall. if there are, Dunlins should show up sooner or later. Not in sufficient quantities to feed Harrisburg juveniles, I agree. Not in Wilmington either, but the odd one is just as good to eat as a mourning dove or pigeon.

Just got caught up with today's news. Yay for the 3rd egg!!!

It was great meeting everyone yesterday - I had a great time and loved seeing Red Girl and her spouse in situ so to speak. My pics mostly turned out blurry; I guess I've dropped my poor camera one or two times too often. You can tell they are birds, but not really much point in posting them - Reenie's and Jane's were so much better, and that's before we even start to mention Kim's!!!

Kim, thank you so much for the lovely photos you have been posting; they are priceless.

As far as names for the male, I'm kind of partial to Rory, which means Red King. Since he is now the king of Red Girl's heart.... :hearts:

Rory sounds like a good possibility! Does anyone like the name Caesar (for Caesar Rodney)? I'm not sure if I like it or not but it was suggested to me at one point.

Thanks Greg & DEF for that info on the catch. I never expected to hear all the birds that they are feeding on, would be right there in their territory. Never see them in the back yards. I like Caesar, but was thinking Rory and Ruby Red "kinda" go together. They are very good names. Caesar goes with the territory, since he has been there longer. Oh, I'm making this worse. I'll quit now. Have a good day, hoping the wind dies down.

I like all of those names mentioned this morning. Kim, you should pick the ones you like best as a reward to yourself for setting up these cams and keeping us informed. :thumbegg:
