I saw somewhere that ravens can count up to five.

The male took a turn on the eggs at around 7:30 EST. A flicker wing is on the sidewalk below the nest.

That doesn't surprise me at all about the ravens, Greg. They are fairly intelligent birds, which only underscores my belief that falcons can count too. :-)

DON'T KNOW IF THAT WAS RED GIRL OR THE MALE ON THE EGGS A MIN AGO, BUT THEY SURE DID GET OFF THEM IN A HURRY AND HEAD OUT AND THAT'S WITH MY VIEW. HOPE THE INTRUDER ISN'T IN THE AREA!

Finally found some time to check the videos. Thanks for the links. It is very heartbreaking to see the former female, however. She was SO beautiful. A couple years ago, maybe even after fledging, our Mom in Harrisburg was attacking the hole in the plywood where the camera aims out at the scrape through the window. She was hanging on it and flapping frantically.

And I guess I don't know Craig. We called him Koppy all the time.

One of them was perched on the roof, then soaring out front a few minutes ago. I've been out a lot this morning and haven't seen or heard evidence of fighting.

Name that Falcon!

Red Girl in Wilmington needs a new, grown-up name, and she needs it soon. To see what's been suggested so far - and to suggest another name or add a comment about those already suggested, click here.

Re: whether the parents know how many kids they have - I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that they can count at least as high as a normal clutch of young. I recently read "Alex and Me" about a researcher and the African Grey Parrot she raised and studied. It seemed that not only could Alex count, he could perform simple addition and subtraction and understood the concept of zero. Even if the African Grey is exceptionally smart in the bird kingdom, I'm sure that the peregrine is at least in the same ballpark when it comes to intelligence. You just have to see that speculative glimmer in their eyes once to know that they are very smart birds. And even if they can't count, I bet they can tell the difference between one and more than one!

Ditto to all of that Sue. I read that book and after watching Mom & Dad on banding day, you can't fool them. Last year one of the men felt her rage on his face, remember that?

I'm wondering if "Red Girl" is done laying. They seem to be incubating rather steady now.

I'm kind of wondering if she's laying an egg right now - 4:55.

Well, Red is really sitting tight right now, so will have to check on her later. Ditto for the dinner, Faith!

I thought for sure that our girl was laying another egg . . .

But she just got up and left, and there are still only 3.

I think you're right, ljames. The band on the left leg certainly looks like dad's.

Thanks ljames, Reenie, and Faith for the ID tips for Caesar!

I was so busy looking for a 4th egg when the falcon got up before that I didn't even check the bands or the color of the feet. Silly me!

Looks like Red just took off. Seemed like she was listening to something outside the box for a moment then --- gone.

At 6:15 EDT I watched Caesar soaring, circling downwind on the north-northwesterly breeze. He was several hundred feet up and went from a few blocks north of the nest building until he was out of sight well south of it, more than a mile. I think they're enjoying the sunny, breezy day - a break from the rain.
