At 6:15 EDT I watched Caesar soaring, circling downwind on the north-northwesterly breeze. He was several hundred feet up and went from a few blocks north of the nest building until he was out of sight well south of it, more than a mile. I think they're enjoying the sunny, breezy day - a break from the rain.

WOW, IT'S GREAT TO SEE THEM SOARING! YOU HAVE SUCH NICE OPEN SPACE TO SEE IT TOO. YES, ALL THE FALCONS DESERVE A BREAK FROM THAT RAIN. AT LEAST THEY CAN ESCAPE THE HEAT IN THEIR SCRAPE. MOM AND LIL DAD IN HARRISBURG HAVE TO PUT UP WITH DIRECT SUN EVERYDAY. THAT IS ONE NICE SCRAPE THEY HAVE THERE!

Thanks for the report on Caesar, Greg. Peregrines are such awesome birds. Last year I watched our Little Dad fly north towards Blue Mountain until I finally lost sight of him. I'd guess that mountain is two or three miles from downtown as the Crow, er Falcon flies. Maybe that's where those Yellow-billed Cuckoos come from! Thought there might be a fourth egg down there, but not yet.

Trying to catch up with the posts. I see the male has been named Caesar. ( a great name) Does that mean that the man who was there the other day could not in fact identify him, then? Sorry if I overlooked the info, but I was thinking that he might already have a name from when he was banded.

Caesar was not named before, ljames. I guess a bunch of us came up with suggestions, and that's the one that seems to have stuck. All hail, Caesar!

Cuckoos weigh almost nothing, so I'm sure that a male could carry one to Harrisburg from nearby Blue Mountain as Jane describes. The downside of that is that if cuckoos are easy to carry, there's not much meat on the bones. Not a problem if you're just giving tidbits to an incubating female, but not good enough for a screaming nestful of hungry growing youngsters. That's when Moms joins Dads hunting, and the pigeons really get hammered. Hopefully in two months or so in Harrisburg and Wilmington and the rest of their places.

That was also my understanding. When Craig Koppie was there on March 24th, he wrote this about the male: "I may have the second digit (finally) of this band and should be able to get us the stats on this long lived male" which led me to believe he might finally be able to identify the male and whether or not a name was given to him at banding. Any word on that?

I might have missed something, but I don't think a name has been given to the male yet. I thought Kim was just asking what we thought of the name... :?

About the name Caesar for the Wilmington male . . .

Briefly, Kim mentioned that the name Caesar (for Caesar Rodney, a Delaware hero for whom the main plaza in Wilmington - Rodney Square - is named) had been suggested to her at some point. Because of the Delaware connection and because several other posters liked the name, Caesar sort of stuck as a great name for our Wilmington male. (You can find all the related posts about his name starting on page 41.)

Obviously, we'll have to reconsider this name if his band numbers can be traced to his point of origin and we find that he was already given a name. Until then, the name Caesar seems fitting for this long-time resident of Wilmington because the name has local significance.
