I went down there this morning and we have at least one hatch. Wingo had a gopher to feed!

You can see some poop art on the back wall under the box, I wonder how many chicks are in there? They would be at least a week old now.

There is a generating plant on the east side of Brandon which is east of the McKenzie site. There is a nest box but the peregrines have not used it and its been there a quite a few years.

Yesterday there were two falcons out there having a bath in the river, which is kind of cool to watch! The female is not banded but the male is and I got his band number. Well, it belongs to Hobbs, a 2016 Brandon hatch. :15heartbeat:

He and Calvin were Hurricane and Sol's two boys. Hobbs would know the area around there. I also noticed he has an injury on his right wing but I've seen him up on the 200 ft stack and his flying seem fine....maybe superficial. They aren't nesting but maybe they will hang out and hopefully come back next spring. It's nice to see another one of Hurricane's chicks has survived the migration back and forth over the years.

Finally able to see the chicks here. I seems there are two but mom was blocking when feeding so I couldn't see if there are more.

He's was here March 23rd last year, so he's a week early. The earliest Hurricane came back was March 30th and wondering if she's going to comeback this year....she is 14.

Wingo was in the nest box this morning then we (me and my 86 year old mother) watched him catch a pigeon off the roof.

A St Patrick’s Day Gift

The luck of the Irish was with our spotter RCF today. She noticed a complete lack of pigeons at McKenzie Seeds today which is a clear sign that something is up at the building.

Wingo Starr is back in Brandon for his third year. Now the wait for Hurricane begins, though her return is far from guaranteed. Hurricane is our oldest bird in the province having hatched at the Radisson in 2007. She did well last year with three chicks, so who knows what the next couple of weeks will bring us from down south.

Wingo was hanging out with a unbanded young female today. She has brown and grey feathers.

Hurricane is usually not back from migration until the first week in April, she still may show up. Here's hoping! She chased a female away last spring when she came home.

New Falcon

It's now April 7, 2021 and Hurricane has not returned yet. I'm thinking she's not coming back. The weather doesn't seemed to have hindered migration for others. The latest she was back was April 13th but everyone was late that year due to a stormy spring.

Anyway, as much as I want her to come back, I don't want her to come back to fight with the unbanded adult falcon that showed up April 1st. Nobody wants to see them fight!

I have dubbed the new falcon "April".

Here's a few photos of April and Wingo.

Looks like Hurricane is not going to return! :girlsad3: She nested here for 12 years and she certainly contributed to the peregrine population. I think she and her mates had 30 chicks fledge. :15heartbeat:

There is no camera here now but today April was laying in the box (incubation mode) this morning. It's -2 celsius or 28 degrees fahrenheit here, so it's a little cool to leave the egg exposed for too long until it warms up a bit. I saw her and Wingo earlier, she was eating on the Scotia building. Wingo was hunting later when she was in the box.

I believe there is a hatch here!

:hatchegg:

I can't see in there but by behavior "April sitting up in the nest" yesterday and today, I am fairly sure they have a hatch. I went down there this morning 6am and I think I just missed the food going into the box.

:loveheart:

I could see a chicks head this morning after a nest exchange. Also there is quite a bit of poop art on the wall under the box, I wonder how many are in there? Time will tell if there are more!

This is Wingo in the box with the chicks or chick. April over on the tower across the street.
