Craig said no more food until we get a hatch. I think she's doing fine without us though. He said she only ate a small part of the bird and didn't go at it like she was really hungry.

I f no hatch and she finds a new mate, and they canoodle, is there a reason I should know why a second clutch would not be O.K. Is it the heat in your area ,when chicks would be born.

If she doesn't start paying more attention to the eggs, I don't think Craig wants to give her any chicks. He's concerned she's more interested in finding a mate.

From what I've read, they'll re-nest in our area if the first one fails!

Hey bev. Last year, eggs were laid in Richmond, Va, pretty late, like the end of May and they did fine. I'm pretty sure it's really hot there.

FYI - On May 4, Kim posted some detailed information about the food deliveries and plans from Craig Koppie, the Fish and Wildlife biologist, on the Wilmington Falcon Nestbox News/Blog. I think you'll find it interesting to read.

She left again, and was looking around a good bit, like another falcon nearby. I feel so sorry for her I don't know what to do.

I think fi she had a chick she would stick with it. But that is just my thought.

Her eggs are so close to hatching (I think), it would be a shame to just have them abandoned now. Has there been any contact with an organization who can finish the incubation process & then foster the chicks out (or return them to the box--whichever is deemed best)? I think most eggs that are abandoned aren't at this stage of development, & also I hope she doesn't abandon them. Who knows what she may be thinking--maybe that chicks won't survive if she doesn't have help providing for them?

If the fostering idea is being considered we all know of a nest in Fort Wayne, IN where an older falcon couple would probably love having at least 1 chick to raise!

I was wondering about incubating them also and putting dummy eggs here. Maybe they do not have the equipment

This is all so interesting! At first I thought Red Girl's mothering instincts would be so strong that she'd focus only on the eggs at the moment and not be out looking for a new male. But the more I ponder what's going on now, I think her mothering instincts are driving her to find a new mate to help her care for her future chicks. I think she knows that's what she has to do to ensure the survival of her chicks, whether from the current eggs or from a re-nesting effort.
